Yes. I'm getting the DJ Krush (not Food) album tomorrow, (DJ Food's album is called "A recipe for disaster") so I can't speak for or against it yet. However, the "Remedies" album is superb hip hop without rap (well, one track features a rapper) and is just feelgood beats. Get it, you won't regret it. ---Christian ---percf@notam.uio.no

Here are two recommendations for that trippy jazzy laid back sound close to Mo'Wax but a bit more electro from the label that's putting out some really cool stuff: 1) Fila Brizilia and 2) Heights of Abraham. The second one has some very ambientish singing on it and the music is as cross sectional of modern music as ever. Very good. Mohsen

Okay, all you IDM folks... maybe you can all be so kind as to help out someone who's a newcomer to this list. I'm relatively not very knowledgeable about IDMish music. I've liked electronic dance music for a long time, starting with the late '80s with Nitzer Ebb and Meat Beat Manifesto which was then called "industrial," and then in '94 I got into stuff like the Orb and FSOL. And I've got a few thislisty CDs, like Coldcut, Photek, and Spacetime Continuum. However, IDM may be a part of my musical tastes, but it's not the primary focus. Guitar-based indie rock and punk rock has always held a slight edge over synth/DJ-based music in my listening preferences, and that's still the case now. So, I don't know how knowledgable about IDM you'd consider me - I'm certainly much more so than your typical mainstream listener who likes Nirvana or Alanis or Hootie, for sure, but I'm completely out of the loop compared to most of the people here who talk about Warp Records and Plaid. So, my question is: what do you recommend to me for essential IDMish CD's? For your reference, here are those electronic-music (not all of which are really all that IDMish) CD's I already have and like... - FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON, Lifeforms *and* Dead Cities - ORB, Live 93 *and* Orbus Terrarum - TECHNO ANIMAL, Re-Entry (and by the way, to the person who posted about that, I had little trouble finding it in stock at Other Music in NYC. I can't imagine that Tower Records wouldn't stock it, either, unless it's just very recently gone out of print.) - KEN ISHII, Jelly Tones - SCORN, Colossus - MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, 99% *and* Subliminal Sandwich (fucking *brilliant* album, by the way! It just does wonders for my mindstate. One of my fave albums of the last several years and I thought it was a damn shame it didn't get more respect!) - MUSLIMGAUZE, Vote Hezbollah - LTJ BUKEM, Logical Progression - SPACETIME CONTINUUM, Emit Ecaps - PHOTEK, Modus Operandi - COLDCUT, Let Us Play - CHEMICAL BROTHERS, Exit Planet Dust *and* Dig Your Own Hole So tell me, what CDs should I be adding to the above list? You can email me privately if you wish to avoid adding clutter to the list. Thank you in advance for your feedback, - John

I find this very bland.

Not very representative of what's being done now. Evanesence is a rather good album as is the remix album of this Ellipsis. I've sort of lost touch with them after Gyral.

Definitely look out Satyricon (the album that got me started in IDM, especially the remixes by Orbital and Aphex Twin of Mindstream).

I'd also recommend adding some Black Dog to that list. You've probably seen that opinions differ on the list to which is the best album but they appear to differ in between Bytes and Spanners.

I find it enthralling. Cocoa Mousse is brilliant. Indeed, the thumpyness of the kicks take a bite from your tolerance tablet, but Ishii soup is way flavor. How do the FLARE releases compare to this and other namesake releases, garden of the palm, tangled notes, utu? Teep np: cure - entreat (for a rainy boston friday afternoon)

It's not really the thumpyness that gets me, it could almost do with being more thumpy in places. It just strikes me as being an aural equivalent of caster oil.

Bah. Listen to the "Endless Season" track again. That cut is brilliant -- a true IDM classic even, IMO. The rest of the album doesn't quite reach the mark of that one unfortunately, though. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "The comfort you demanded is now mandatory!" - Jello Biafra on: Metamatics - "Skunk Me"

I'm amazed you've not got any Orbital. I thought just about everyone was into something of theirs. Try the brown album from '93 or last year's Snivilisation. And seeing as you (presumably) like the Coldcut album, then it's worth trying some of the Ninja Tune comps. It might be a good idea to try out Flux Trax, a double CD of classic techno (is it still OK to call it techno?). Last year's "Snivilisation"? I think you mean last year's "In Sides". The brown album is good but not essential.

Here's my essential list if anyone cares anymore: (it's a bit well... everyone knows these albums, and I veer more towards ambient influenced stuff) 1. Brian Eno--Instrumental Box Set 2. Orb--Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld 3. Aphex Twin--Selected Ambient Works 85-92 4. Mu-Ziq--Bluff Limbo 5. Autechre--Amber (and jeers to whoever said this was "soulless") 6. Kraftwerk--Computer World 7. Squarepusher--Feed Me Weird Things 8. FSOL--Lifeforms 9. 808 State--90 10. Polygon Window--Surfing on Sine Waves Respect, Rusty

Get Cylobian Sunset, it's represent his best work, imo. bye rob

"Flyplate" is actually a track on the Glob EP (on Musik Aus Strom). -- Adam J Weitzman, Individual, Inc. (soon to be NewsEdge Corp.) -- http://www.individual.com http://www.newsedge.com "In skiing news, trees remained undefeated and untied." - Rick Reilly, Sports Illustrated
