Last night I checked out a show at the local LA noise venue, the Smell. It
was a 3-act night for 5 bucks wit da following:
David Rothbaun Trio- These guys were some sort of salty space-rock band,
they were ok, they seemed to rely on rhythm too much and their guitar work
was a bit repetitive. There was some neato distortion pumping out of their
amplifiers though, so the sounds weren't bad.
Open City- These guys were pretty intense, two gentleman who I would expect
to find sleeping in Justin Pearson's cupboard using guitar feedback and
magnetics to throw sound all over your eardrums. At first I thought they
were pretty wanky because they were playing the guitar like a koto (layed on
its side) and putting all these magnets and instruments on it, but that
subsided eventually and they got up and took the guitars to the amplifiers
and along with some little metal distortion boxes created some thrumming
noise domes. Pretty fun stuff, I purchased their LP which is great!
Puss- These guys were a free-jazz ensemble that were good, that whole free
jazz every-instrument-at-once kinda thing going on, pretty jiggy.
Then on the bus ride back to UCLA, a transsexual handed me a note stating
"You are so beautiful." I thanked her and we had a very odd conversation
about economics.
-Jon, back to work.
