I've seen an album called "Generation Star Wars" by Alec Empire sitting in my local shop for a while, seems vaguely interesting - anyone know what it is/what's it like ? Thanx if you can help, Simon.

Alec Empire -- some interesting fucked up noisy techno, along the same general lines as Aphex Twin, though perhaps not as essential. When it came out it was very popular in these parts. I enjoy it, but it's no SAW I or Spatula Freak. Make them let you listen! Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

BUY IT! It was one of my nominations for IDM album of the year. It's Alec Empire doing intelligent electronica for Mille Plateaux (which is the Cologne acid posse's IDM label) and it is phenomenal, twisted music. From low-fi high-speed swung jazzy acid through high-speed old school darkside hardcore through sampled bits of color commentators discussing Hakim Olajuwan (sp?) doing his thing on the court interspersed with more traditional IDM fare. Anybody who knows Alec Empire's history (first a member of legendary ;) Cologne punk phenomenon Atari Teenage Riot and then a member of the Force Inc. posse when that label was as its hardest, and now artist du jour for Analog recordings) can tell you what looniness he's capable of. It may not sound like your cup of tea, but I haven't found anybody yet who doesn't think it's the bees' knees after a couple listens. Plus the massively copyright-violating nature of the cover art is enough to get a grin and a big thumbs up from me, even if it _did_ lead to the remaining copies of the record getting pulled by the distributors after Lucasfilm's lawyers cleared their collective throat. Showing that SF's hordes of wannabe DJs still have a thing or two to learn, I was able to pick up my copy for $5.99 (after it had been marked down twice) from Rasputin's in Berkeley. East coast people who are having difficulty finding copies there may want to drop me a line if they want me to drift out there and look for another copy, because there were a few left at that price last time I was there. yrz, ozy ozymandias G desiderata ogd@organic.com Ravers Suck Our Sound (415)284-6888 http://www.organic.com/Staff/ogd/ ::AOAIOXXYSZ::
