The Nov 16th Rolling Stone (with the Smashing Pumpkins on the cover) has a story about artists who define the expanding boundaries of rock music. One of the artists featured is Future Sound of London. They are pictured in a food joint, and look rather bored. Cobain looks like he's sporting the Bono/Achtung look, too. Where they trail from: Industrial London neighborhood Dollis Hill What they sound like: A sonic collage of techno, dance funk and found noises compiled from their electronic library Musical Ancestors: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno Are they techno, ambient, trip-hop or what? None of the above. "We're trying to make an album that takes on the whole history of music and loses," says Gary Cobain. Their notion of really cool entertaiment: Radio broadcasts transmitted live from the studio. Enemies: Guitar-rock noodges, hairy roadies Gary Cobain's relation to that other guy: None.
