I heard this yesterday and was pretty disappointed, to be honest. Mediocre lacklustre electro-lite, like the more boring Skam stuff. I *seriously* doubt its BoC (although a beatless track does have a faint tinge to it) as there's no use of any of their trademark sounds, and its all a bit sparse (un-lush if you like). If i had to bet on it being one of Skam's current roster, i'd say Bola, but it's more likely to be a compilation by new artists or whatever. Incidentally, they were most assuredly *not* flying out of Rub-A-Dub (about 7 copies left yesterday) so anyone wanting one should give them a try. ________________________________________________________ "I believe in the modern world. Hullo, Finally received my copy of the Shapes 3x12" today. It was well worth the wait, although it is a bit expensive for just one track per side (I paid 13.50GBP or about $20). I've given it just one listen as of now, so I won't review it just yet - though it is one of the best records I've bought in ages. But, does anyone _really_ know who is behind it? I went through all Darrell Fitton/Bola material that I have, and I'm quite certain that most of the tracks (if not all) are his. If anyone can concur/deny this I'd like to hear about it. And if anyone has _factual_ info, please step forward with it. Label, track names... The runout grooves reveal different catalog codes for each side, AM19679A - AM19683A. I know this issue has been discussed here before, and I apologise for the repetition, but I've deleted the previous threads. If you don't want to clutter the list with repetition, please respond privately. OK, I've listened to this a couple of times now, and it's pretty good. It's a bit of a throwback, in that it's not terribly complex either in structure or sonicity (is that a word?), but I like the way it flows and the sounds contained within. Not sure it's really worth all the secrecy or scarcity, but it's a good listen. I'm not quite sure I agree with the Bola comparisons. If I had to guess who this was, I'd say it was Beaumont Hannant. The sounds seem reminiscent of a lot of the sounds he's used on his recordings. Listen again. Listen more closely. I totally disagree. Just a few days back I listened through all of my Hannants. The comparison with Darrell Fitton's material is about a 80-90% better match than with Hannant's. Though I'm not sure about it, I have to defend my position that it really is Fitton. As we all know, there's not a lot of Fitton material around to compare the Shapes to, but I still think that it is by him. Definitely not by Hannant, the sounds are too smooth and irregular for Hannant (I should know - I've been a Hannant fan a long time before I became a Fitton enthusiast). Secondly, on Shapes the trademark sounds and (sometimes not so) subtle distortion of Hannant are not present. Even his most gentle tracks have these elements (e.g. Sym-Phon5 on Tastes & Textures 2 or Ormeau (with Lida Husik)). On the other hand, a lot of familiar elements Fitton has used before are quite evident in Shapes. Listen to Blipsalt or Metalurg on AI2, or any of his Bola releases on Skam (Bola 1 EP, Soup or Triangle Cake 7"). His tracks on Gescom EP 1 are also very distinguishable. All of these I can compare with Shapes with ease, and find them very similar. Of course, now someone comes up with the _real_ person behind the release and I've made a total fool out of myself being so sure about it, but hey, that's how life sometimes is. I'd still give it better odds at being by Fitton than by Hannant. What happened to Bola's Mauver anyway? I haven't seen it anywhere... after keeping my eye out for this release for a couple of weeks, i happened on upon it in the "hardcore" section of Mondo Kim's in NYC this weekend. ;] i've only listened to it once, so it might need to grow on me a little, but i'd say it's kinda hit and miss. the square/hexagon platter is my favorite of the three. some of the other tracks seemed kinda unfinished.

i've only heard one Bola release, which i picked up from some MP3 server - and i'll gladly purchase as soon as i figure out which release it is and find a copy :) - and the Beaumont Hannant remix on Ae's Basscadet EP. the "Shapes" tracks don't particularly strike me as being all that similar to either of those. what interests me most, however, is that most ppl just assume this is someone already well known in the IDM world, and not someone new. until i picked it up, i figured there was some reason to assume it was Bola or some other "name" in the genre, but based on my impression that the tracks sound unfinished, i wouldn't be that surprised if it was someone new. on the other hand, i might just need to hear more material by the artists that some have been guessing this might be. *shrug* btw.. i had someone at Throb tell me that there had been some sort of announcement of who was behind the "Shapes" material. at least that was their explanation for not having a copy in stock. i guess this isn't true though, eh? - jo5_h --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Apparently the release was held back because of a bad quality pressing according to the guy I talked to in Ambient Soho, but it hit the shops in London today (on CD at least, I didn't check the vinyl) so you should be seeing it soon hopefully.
