Watching the Tube last night I was reminded of an earlier post to this list, by someone who asked if anyone else liked Blancmange's Living on the ceiling, I guess that footage on the Tube a few weeks ago of this very track may have prompted this query. Well it certainly sent me on a little nostalgia trip, I used to love that single, and despite being completely inept at playing any musical instrument I even managed to work out the main Asianesque riff and hammer it out on my Casio VL-tone (now *there's* a keyboard!). More memories last night though with footage of Chakk from the 80's does anyone on the list remember them? They were from Sheffield I think, and released an LP called '13 days in an elevator' which I owned once and loved, anyone know what happened to them? What's scattered on the floor in my room? Vibert&Simmonds - Weirs (once overlooked 'til Teep showed me the light) Underworld - Born Slippy (fast, hard, fresh) Aphex - I care because you do (title speaks volumes) Wagon Christ - Throbbing Pouch Guy called Gerald - Black Secret Technology (has anyone else got into this yet?) Aphex - SAW11 ( don't ask) Basic Channel comp Apologies for the bandwidth abuse but I'm going to Tribal Gathering on Saturday and I'm sooooo excited i simply *can't* do any work. later jeff

Got it yesterday. Maybe not the best thing they have done (knowing the nature of this list someone will complain anyway :), but not crap either - could be a big grower. Thumping, trancy, housy in a fucked-up way, surreal, the lyrics on weekend lager lout racists (or something like that). Really messed up my mind :) Oh, and jungle haters out there beware - there's some of it in the air, and not in the smallest amounts :) ERkki Tampere, pHinland trerra@uta.fi

First, i'll say that it's growing on me. i'm beginning to *really* like it - at first listen it was "WHOO HOO!" and then the track didn't really go anywhere...but repeated listens are rewarding and giving me things in the track i didn't hear before.... as far as the 'jungle' in the track....i have to give a big two fingers to all the hype machines...this track is as jungle as the Carpenters. ;D (excuse the bad metaphor :) ) Just because the track has a breakbeat in it it's labeled 'jungle'...whatever. It's got a nice break-accompanied-by-a-FOTF-kick and i like it. It's *not* jungle. "Born Slippy is a good track"... Speaking of jungle and new stuff...I bought Gerald's "black secret technology' this weekend for myself and can say that this is the only truly (and i mean truly, i'm a big 4 Hero fan....) innovative jungle (save maybe ltj bukem) around. This album is amazing and it would do most idm'ers good to check it out... also found....LFO "tied up" and the old but fabu "what is house" ep....Blue "resistance" (the verdict is still out) and Sabres "Versus" ep (ESSENTIAL!) mikebee

OK Mike, you won - even the Underworld guys themselves denied it being jungle (in the fear of being accused of having jumped on the bandwagon?) in the latest NME, so I must have been in the minority here :) And no, I have *no* intention to be part of the hype machine - who gives a fuck about that anyway :) Actually I meant the B-side mix: but breakbeat or jungle, big deal. Do these labelings really make any difference to anyone else except the record company A&R men, the hype music journalists in the glossy fad magazines and the most desperate trend hoppers? Fock 'em - a good track is a good track is a good track... :)

I'll second that, wasn't there even a jungle mix of 'Voodoo Ray' ('Voodoo Rage') or have my old ears failed me? :)

Wow! I've been listening to this same stuff lately. I liked on the Blue album most the old skool dub tracks like 'Circle Lines'; maybe there should have been more that to my Augustus Pablo/King Tubby/Lee Scratch Perry tastes, but the-man-hanging-with-the-meat-hooks-in-his- nipples cover was neat anyway :) And the Sabres... mmm! That Depth Charge mix really blew my mind. I got the special edition of 'Versus'; with the 7", 10" and 12" packed in one - has anyone else seen this (remember that Link/E621 2x12" edition)? I still think I *gotta have* the CD, call me a trainspotter or something :)

Being a long time idm dude I listen to them back in their Freur days at well. I really really enjoy this album. In fact, I like it more than their last effort. Bit more poetic, excellent dynamics. From an interview I read, Karl and Rick were just spontaneous for this album letting it all just flow...and it shows brilliantly. Most review sites haven't taken to this work as much as I have. I think it may be a bit generational. Karl is expressing more art and happiness in his most recent work...and I can relate. :-) --- wells oliver <wells@submute.net> wrote:

I will qualify my favorable UW review with the flavoring that I listen to all kinds of tunes. From the Venician Snares, Muziq, Dead Can Dance, DVOA the whole gamut. I appreciated the new UW for its artsy lyrics and beats. It isnt deep, but it is fun to have on with a Lager. :-) --- "Albers, Brian" <BAlbers@PremiereRadio.com> wrote:

It is first and foremost an Underworld record. There are elements I like and some I dislike. It must be understood that UW is one of those bands which (despite the brilliance of Dubno and any good things about the others) have become easy and popular targets of the IDM-l populace. My own preference runs towards the 1st two UW mkII records...this one reveals directions I really don't care for and some which are good (to my ears). What I dislike are the UK progressive hints (thankfully, this does not dominate the record entirely). What I meant by the first remark above is that I don't agree with some who feel the band is 'cashing in' on trends; there's nothing there which isn't a part of what has been there for the past couple of records. I hated "Bruce Lee" from Beaucoup Fish and there were a few others I'd toss readily. It isn't as crappy as some people will rush to claim, but it's no Dubno or STITI. jeff At 07:11 PM 10/12/2002, wownflutter wrote:

Having heard about Darren Emerson's departure from the group, I was afraid that they were going to go all arty/wanky. After numerous listens, I think its a solid record. As with most Underworld albums, there a couple of throwaway tracks but there is plenty of great dance oriented tracks on this one to hold it together. Track 8 is excellent. As for those who were saying that they were hopping on some new-fangled trends, I would have to totally disagree. I hear more of a straight up techno vibe on this on, more so than I heard on the last two.
