just the other day i picked up soundbytes by r. sakamoto. the 14 tracks are taken from albums that he did in 1981,85,86 and 1 song from '93. the stuff isreally brilliant techno. it ranges from amazing ambient tracks to some pretty hard ones. does anyone know of any ryuichi sakamoto, haruomi hosono, yukihiro takahashi or yellow magic orchestra that is a must have? i saw rs's new album at the store at the same time... it was produced by goh hotoda, but that's all i remember from the sleeve other than the amazingly colorful picture. in these tracks you can really see the beginnings of the ambient music that is being released today. rb

The new Sports Remixes of Hosono's stuff are excellent IMO. Money well spent especially compared to a lot of other purchases I've made recently on rubish. Unfortunately, I haven't listened to any or Sakamoto's soundtrack releases. Any comments out there? There is a Yellow Magic Orchestra comp called "Kyoretsu Na Rhythm * Characters" that is a good overview. Much of there stuff is a little sing-songy cute for my taste but, like Shonen Knife, they are excellent distorters of Western Pop music. The must have, however is "High Tech/No Crime" which is the remix album. Remixes from Shamen, Mark Gamble, Robert Gordon, Zero B, LFO, The Orb, Altern 8, 808 State, and Orbital. The cover art mentions "Sweet Exorcist" (which is a Richard Kirk alias, right?) but nothing in the credits mentions such a thing. The Altern 8 mix of Multiples is a wonderful breakbeat number; the mixture of the YMO tinker-toy melodies with breaks is perfect. The synth sound choices are hilarious -- a lot of them sound like presets on my Casio SK-1. Soundbytes (by R Sakamato) has some great stuff as well. Yes, one of the few Altern-8 tracks I like, actually. ...yes, Casio Lives! Listenning to those patch choices makes me laugh harder at those who are paying a few hundred $ for a TB-303, Ha! I've got a Casio LCD TV now!! I am going to build a shrine to my Casio equipment, PT-1 included!

I like Esperanto and an album (tape actually) that I got at an Oriental music store in a Chinatown area near Washington DC that translates as "Futurismo" or "Futurisma" or somthing in '88. Excellent early digi synths! The track "Futurism" has a cool loopy mellow sound with a voice-synthesized computer giving an overview of the Futurist art movement. Also, Sakamoto's "B-2 Unit" LP helps one realize that Artificial Intelligence/Biorhythm-comp minimalism has a history outside of Kraftwerk. Also, if you like his soundtrack work, the Sakamoto-conducting-Tokyo-symphony of his electronic pieces and soundtrack (Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence and Last Emperor) is huge and very moving. This cd set brought on a personal epiphany about the soulfulness behind electronic music-making...

Is this a serious request for a copy or a joke? (I don't see a smiley anywhere). BTW the 12" of These things happen was one of my favorite singles of the '80's. The album is excellent to, though when I heard Innablabbablabba when it came out I thought that it had sucked.
