The IDM Poll 1994 ----------------- Here it is, the end of year poll. Reaction to the idea has been good, and I've included various suggestions for categories. Now its down to you. The more of you send me your entries the more definitive the poll will be. I am hoping to get a reply from everyone! So get your thinking caps on, rummage through your toons and send me your entry (no excuses). All replies should be via personal Email i.e. NOT to the idm mailing list. I will process the results which will be posted to the list and made available on the Web archives (and hopefully via some other publications). I'd like to think we'll get some interesting results given the international nature of the idm list. The entry form follows. Please reply, where possible, using this format. This will make my life much easier when processing the entries. Get back to me by 16th December latest - this gives you a couple of weeks or so. I don't think there's too many releases in the run up to Christmas which would affect entries. ----------------------------------------------------------------Cut----- IDM Poll 1995 IDM Album Of The Year (Three equal votes for releases in '94) 1)................... 2)................... 3)................... Assuming that this poll only applies to items released during 1994, I'd like to point out that neither 'Tango n' Vectif' nor 'Pentamorous Metamorphosis' are eligible, as they were both released in 1993. Those were the only two releases I could forsee anyone voting for that there might be any question about ("'Incunabula?' who'd vote for that?").

Well, I can think of a few things already out in the UK that won't be released until January in the US (Mu-Ziq vs. Auteurs, 'Global Chillage,' 'Point 3'). I might dig deep for the Rising High release of the IF album (if I can find it), especially with the Astralwerks announcement having that cryptic line about "different mixes" (me a trainspotter?), but not the others, excellent though they might be. hmmm, i don't think the CD version of 'Tango' was available in '93. so, it's definitely fair game. i do think paying attention to dates would help keep this 'year end' poll pertinent. yet, perhaps we can squeeze in one last question on the ballot: best sale bin score of the year (read: cheap 'dated' material) Teep some ambient text for you all . why should it apply to '94 releases only? stuff released in '93 might be extremely influential in '94. if you listened to it in '94 and it mattered to you it should count. rb

You're right that the CD wasn't available until this year - I disagree, though, with your reasoning that the reissue makes it a '94 release. I guess Mr Burrell will have to make a ruling on this one. :)

What's the point of calling it a best of '94 poll then? Either releases from this year are the only ones that should count (or things released some arbitrary date late last year, which would only make things more confusing), or we might as well call it an alltime best of idm poll. We've done that before. But again, I defer to the pollster's judgement. (If he announces that the year of release is irrelevant, though, I'll feel real funny voting for Keith LeBlanc's 'Major Malfunction' from 1986). BTW: in my original post, I didn't mean to imply that 'Incunabula' isn't worthy of consideration, I assumed from all the reviews of 'Amber' I've read here saying it's much better than the debut that Autechre fans would more likely choose the new one. My apologies for any offense. C. -- (Chris.Hilker) cspot@hyperreal.com

Aye, said the bannister. This reminds me of 1986, when Robert Heartburn ... erm, Hilburn (chief L.A. Times Pop Music Critic *cough*) put "Psychocandy" in his Top Ten list for that year, even though it was released November 11th, 1985. Of course, the reason he did was because it wasn't until 1986 that a freebie U.S.-pressed (Sire) copy crossed his desk ... I guess that means that it didn't exist before then. But hey, don't get me started on Critics ... or Top Ten polls, for that matter; I think both of them are pointless and stupid. Buy what you want to buy and like what you want to like and make up your own internal Top Ten if you want. - Greg

I rated "Incunabula" as my favourite LP of 93 overall, and "Right in the night" by Jam & Spoon as my favourite single overall (I'm not just an IDM'er!) I may well rate "Amber" as my favourite of 94, but I have to give it some thought. My thoughts on poll eligibility would be if the disc has (c) and (p) 1994 on it, then it is eligible. Surely that's pretty unequivocal? J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - jamess@firefox.co.uk

What about albums that are released in December? Are they automatically out of the running simply because the poll is completed before anyone has had the chance to listen to them? I say that we should postpone the poll until Jan. 1995, just to give the albums with December releases a chance. But I guess this poll has already begun, so perhaps in the future, then. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Bob Weisend | "What do you think about youth | | rweisend@oboe.aix.calpoly.edu | in Asia?" i have a hard time postponing thoughts. :) i'll be thinking about my vote up until new years day. then i think i'm gonna let it fly. i forget, why are we not posting the originals to the list? Teep on now: low ride <where did it go?>

Since _Bluff Limbo_ only came out on vinyl (1,000 copies) in 1994, with a possible CD release in 1995, should we knock this one off too? If Hilker has such a problem with release dates, then let him confine it to his own list. ____________________________________________________________________________ Paul Rafanello ambience@delphi.com ____________________________________________________________________________
