ASTRALWERKS: PRESS RELEASE October 24, 1994 before and after ambient An Inaugural Event of Electronic Cafe International FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON LIVE FROM THEIR STUDIO On-line Discussion with Erik Davis, Carlo McCormick, DJ Spooky and guests, with Bill Laswell, Christian Marclay, David Behrman, Terre Thaemlitz, Tetsu Inoue, Cypher 7, Zoar, DJ Olive and Jaron Lanier Dates: November 4-5 November 4: New York 9pm, Santa Monica 6pm November 5: New York 9pm, London 2am Tickets at The Kitchen: $15, Members $12 After a summer of development and testing, The Kitchen inaugurates its second floor cafe/theater as the New York "strong site" of Electronic Cafe International. before and after ambient, a weekend festival of new electronic music, with live, interactive links to London and Santa Monica, will feature a panel discussion of ambient music, extended evenings of continuous performance live at The Kitchen, and special on-line collaborations by artists performing simultaneously in all three cities. Electronic music has seen a major resurgence in the last two years, emerging out of the underground techno-rave scene. This new cultural phenomenon is the result of many factors, perhaps the most significant being the ever increasing accessibility of musical technology and the concern with consciousness expansion in rave culture. The context for presentation of this new ambient/electronic music has been the "chill out" rooms of dance clubs, frequently augmented by video or projections. In before and after ambient, artists from this burgeoning field will be presented in an experimental art space context - The Kitchen - for the first time. The series will also present a number of artists from the -more- experimental art music domain who are working with related ideas and materials, suggesting a compelling web of connections and contrasts that has yet to be articulated. Future Sound Of London, recognized for their groundbreaking electronic aural and visual landscapes will be performing live from Earthbeat Studios, just outside London. They will also be transmitting video, courtesy of unofficial third member of FSoL, Buggy G. Riphead. Buggy is responsible for all the graphics and artwork related to FSoL. Earlier this year the group transmitted live from their studio over Radio One in England and to other European radio stations and Buggy transmitted images through the internet to watch in realtime with the radio broadcast. The technological aspects of before and after ambient are made possible in large part by a newly installed ISDN lines which carry video and audio signals in and out of the Electronic Cafe International at The Kitchen. Electronic Cafe International, headquartered in Santa Monica, California, is thought of as "the cafe for the global village" by its founders, Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz. The Electronic Cafe consists of a number of permanently installed multi-media teleconferencing facilities incorporating real cafes, linked together to create an international "venue" for cultural exchange. Information and telephone reservations for all Kitchen events may be obtained by calling The Kitchen's general number at (212) 255-5793. Advance tickets are available at The Kitchen Monday through Friday, 10am -5pm, or through TicketMaster at (212) 307-7171.
