On May 20, 6:35pm, you proclaimed: } I do think we should consider a renaming, as the phrase "Intelligent } Dance Music" grates a little more every time I have to type it... :) } } As far as the Great Renaming goes, do we want to make a formal } proposal/vote thing about this (Fluid?) } } I'd have to agree that Electronic Dance Music is probably a bit overbroad } as a name, but I worry that Armchair Techno would rule out things like the } King Tubby stuff that's been brought up today... I don't think Fluid or I ever intended the term "Intelligent" in the name to be anything other than satirical. I don't consider this music more inherently intellectual or "prescient" than specific examples in a lot of other musical genres. In my opinion worrying about the term "Intelligent" in IDM is akin to worrying about the word "Acid" in acid jazz. *It's just a name*. The reason the list was started and the reason it's been pretty darn successful over the past year was because "IDM" described a nice chunk of new dance music that had come out - not too limited as to get no traffic, not too broad as to become alt.music.techno, and rich enough to inspire discussions about where it came from and where it's going. What exact type of music does it describe? That's a very hard question to answer, and in my opinion one that's better left unanswered. We have reference bands - AFX, the AI series, Warp releases, etc. - and anything anyone feels that people who enjoy the above would also enjoy should be encouraged. If there is interest in starting a house music list, I'd be willing to open up techno.stanford to it. Send me mail if you are interested, and/or you'd be willing to maintain it, and I'll consider it.
