That reminds me of an old thread by Fran on NE-Raves. I have been
wondering as of late if there are any women creating some of the music
that I know and love. I know that women are beginning to break into djing
and promoting a little more than in the past, witness Your Sisters' House
and Laura (of east and west coast fame), but I have yet to hear of women
writing, performing, mixing or producing the music. I hope that I am
simply clueless (wouldn't be the first time) and women are beginning to
dominate the scene, but I kind of doubt it. By the way, simply providing
vocals alone does not IMHO constitute creating and shaping the music.
Although singing itself can be highly creative, I feel that many women
(especially black women) have been exploited by both musicians and record
companies for their voices, purrs, and moans. However, please do not
misread my comments to mean that every time a woman sings, she is being
exploited; that simply is not the case.
So please clue me in on any presence of women in the scene or
behind it.
