Its definitely not new, but its been a huge trend for the past several years amoung a number of producers in "breakcore" (ex: Bong-Ra, Enduser, etc.) and there's been a pretty big surge in the ragga jungle scene in general. It's definitely one of the more popular sounds. I guess its an easy way to hook people into the more crazy percussion styles because they fall for the samples. It is kind of an overdone sound at this point.
