i'm sure this has been debated here ad nauseam, and is slightly O/T from IDM per se, but i somewhat support this. mp3's are nice to check something out but the sonic change is massive, and the quality is not what it should be. even in cases of really excellent conversion rates, it's almost like the music has been run through some kind of subtle but definitely perceptible filter. as an artist, i hate the thought of slaving away on a track for months and then having it compressed down to something so bad-sounding, or at best, as though it was remastered without my approval. back to the IDM connection, it was reported that autechre sent out promos of 'draft 7.30' on cassette as a foil against pre-release mp3 encoding and proliferation. it's been said that CDR's actually lose something in the process as well, and from listening and speaking to some people i'd have to agree. i also support CDs and vinyl as "art objects", which can be seen as multimedia if enough care and attention is paid to the design and execution. and of course the potential bundling of CD-ROM files on discs and bonus DVDs added bring this even further into reality. i'm for all the above in the name of art however, not as some lame "marketing ploy" to entice people. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
