Hello list, I took a break from catching up on all the digests flowing into my inbox, and finally had a chance to read up (well, i still have a couple to read, but I was inspired to reply now). So, it's my personal opinion that there is no inherant good/bad to downloading mp3s. I think that the artists/labels wishes should be respected, but I realize that people will copy mp3s and share them regardless. I think that it is maybe okay to cue up stuff (download and delete) to make a better informed decision (am I gonna wanna listen to this enough to buy it?). I don't mind real audio files for this, though some disagree. And my local record store lets me listen before I buy. I saw in small print on the back of the MEAM album on Skam today "no copies please." They want to and ought to be paid for their work & the risk they take publishing it & the effort of finding artists and offering them a deal to pay them, etc. Its costly, and for every successful label and artist there are likely 100+ that struggle. Everyone feels the artists (who make "good" music) should be paid for their work. What about the label that finds them, and takes the risk to press their music? A little backgroung of where I'm coming from: I am a musician/recording artist/performer/dj and recently started a record label, and I want exposure for the music of my friends and me (and ideally i want to publish works of more established artists that I like). But when I press 600 12"s next month, I'm hoping to sell them. I think that a lot of people don't feel bad about sharing the music (P2P). I just hope that there are enough people who still buy disks to support a future release on my label (the money I would like to make back on this release will go back into the label's expenses). I will give away maybe 100 disk for promoting. I'm considering offering mp3 downloads of featured songs for college radio stations on the website, but I'm not sure how to reach them to get them to notice. And I'm not sure all college stations these days are capable of mixing off computer. As for the Warp artists thread. I personally respect Warp's decision to publish music by whomever they choose. They are taking the risk, and even when I don't like the music of some of their artists so much, I appreciate the quality of product, and accept that others do like the artist's music. I doubt that I will like every release on that or any label enough to buy them all (even if I could afford to). But who am I to decide for them who to publish? So here are the records I got today (and therefore recommend): impulse: one-six-four-one-seven ep with autechre rmx on !k7 millimetric: electronic waves on goodlife mescalinum united: repress of classic afx remixes with new ones on acardipane johannes Heil: 20,000 leagues under the skin (kanzleramt) d'arcangelo: corner ep on white leather autechre: envane (warp) warehouse find or repress? planet-mu allstars: criminal (repress?) and I woulda bought Meam but they couldn't track down the dvd its supposed to come with, so I might get it later. But yeah, I can't really buy records for another month or 2 so I have to not go to online/local record stores for a while=( Sorry if this is long-winded, Geoff http://dickandjanerecords.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
