Personally I hearken back with some fondness to the days when all was simply called techno and IDM (or IDM-l) embraced styles more readily. Not that subgenres and delineations aren't normal and good for descriptions and not that there weren't some distinctions made even in the early 90s. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the insulation of lists like this, though, and forget that you have to be pretty much on the inside to acknowledge the differences.
