i believe the javanese (?) gamelan orchestra is not
tuned "very generally, for example close to A" but
rather
specifically, just not in tune with the traditional
western scale or even note pitches. also the "weird
warbly" effects that it produces I think are harmonics
which come out from the combination of pitches. and
yes, the traditional gamelan music can be very
arhythmic and mellow (call it boring, i understand)
but it's a very cool sound to add to your own
sound-collage experiments, my tastes prefer ones with
some kind of pulse or beat to it.
