I love Mouse on Mars. I bought Idiology yesterday and found myself
skipping tracks on first listen, which is never a good sign. The songs
that stuck as the best to me were tracks 2,3, and the last track. I'd
name names, but I don't have the cd case with me as I am at work. My
favorite of theirs is "Autoditacker", and I'm also a big fan of Niun
Niggung. Any time I put in an "IDM" cd and hear screeching noise and
complete lack of rhythmn, I lose interest. I fail to see the genius in
sequenced noise bursts, random beats, and ugly-sounding digital feedback.
I see these things as something I could do in about 10 minutes on my PC
without even using anything other than soundforge. I'm not saying
Idiology isn't genius, I'm just saying I fail to see it (possibly due to
an utter lack of formal musical training on my part). It's not my bag,
but I'm sure I'll give the album a few more listens just because of the
fact that it's Mouse on Mars. I just won't listen to it on headphones.
As a disclaimer: I've always been more into the "chill-out", dancey,
artificial intelligence vibe as far as "idm" goes, so I won't claim that
this critique is coming from someone who has any interest in
experimentation for the sake of experimentation.
