When I asked RDJ about the existence of Q-Chastic, he smiled and said "Yea... it exists..."
nodding his head. From the expression on his face, you could tell it was probably not the first
time someone asked him about this record and he knew it was hard to get...
About the Universal Indicator comps, I asked him in what way he was involved and he said:
"I did three tracks... on the red one" I repeated him his answer for confirmation to which he
replied the usual "yea".
Then I asked him if he intended to put out anything new soon, and he was suddenly more
talkative about it, he said: "oh yes, actually, besides we're going to start a new label..." and
the rest was just mumbling to my ears as the music started to shriek across the room.
Finally, I asked him whether it was a problem for me to send a demo to Rephlex being French
given that most artists on that label are English (actually, I'm stupid asking him that question:
Bogdan for instance is not English either... but it was 3 a.m. so forgive me). :-)
And he said: "Oh yea... just send a demo..." with this little shrug and a "what do you have to
lose ?" frown. I thanked him for his answers, left the room and stood a few metres away from
him. A few seconds later, as he was probably looking for the exit, he walked again in front of
me, smiled and thanked me before leaving...
All that to say that I think he was being honest with the answers he gave me.
The first thing I told him was actually that my answers would go to this mailing list (which he
knows, given that he was subscribed to it a few years ago for those who remember), and of
course, he replied: "yea".
So, I know he's the king of misinformation, but I'm not another journalist asking him about
Windowlicker. Our conversation was friendly and the questions I asked him were rather
specialized, so why would he lie to me when I show so much interest in his work ?
Maybe he's just a moody guy who wants to jack it all in one day and work on new music the
other... hence the contradictions you get from his interviews...
As for the post mentioning that he didn't need to create a new label... I don't know... I mean
Rephlex is mainly dance-oriented, maybe he needs one that would focus more on melodies...
I don't know... Is he supposed to DJ at Nesh on December 8th ? One of you guys could ask
him for more precisions about what he intends to do...
Anyway, that's what he told me in person and what I felt... this was just my 2 cents... now
you're free to think what you will, but please just don't jump on me if he never puts out a new
label because that may just be another one of his moods. :-)
