I think he was talking about Brian Eno...who is, indeed, credited with inventing the term 'ambient' to describe what ambient music is today...(and has been for the past 25 years or so) As far as the link with MBV and IDM (because everyone has to say soemthing, right), I'd say this...those of us who have been listening to IDM since the beginning listened to stuff like MBV before...when there was no IDM. When we were all stuck in the world of rock 'n' roll, big hair bands and the craziness of acid house (which just seemed 'too hippy' for many of us), My Bloody Valentine was doing things with sound that we liked. I might even daresay that many of us who've been around long enough to remember when AI 1 and 2 hit the stores were also fans of stuff like early Orb and KLF, though clearly these aren't IDM, either. In many ways, IDM isn't about the sound (because, honestly, where the hell does Squarepusher's drill'n'bass fit into it?) but the attitude and the approach to sounds. For newcomers, that may be confusing because there doesn't seem to be a connection between Brian Eno or My Bloody Valentine or the Orb and Bola or BoC, but that's because you're newcomers. Those of us who have been searching for this stuff for 15 years first found MBV or Eno or the KLF. THAT is the connection. Disclaimer: For those newcomers reading this, please don't take offense. I don't mean any judgment by this term, but only as a way of drawing a distinction between those of us who remember anticipating Autechre's first full-length and those of us who were doing something else at the time. There are many reasons for being a newcomer...not all of them bad...we were all there sometime, anyway. my four cents ---brian C Twomey wrote:
