I'm an eighteen-year-old student who got into idm thru stuff like Mu-Ziq's
"Urmur Bile Trax" EPs and AFX. I'd heard a lot of stuff about some of the
tracks on this Warp release, but I'd never heard **ANY** of them, and
while I think it's good that a lot of
them are easily available now on this CD, I think there a *lot* of duff
tracks on there. I can't help but feel better selections could have been
made. I think there might have been an urge to select "cool" tracks rather
than other more mainstream stuff which might have been perceived as less
worthy...
Now, I need to explain that a little. There's some really good stuff on
here...especially Disc 2 with 808 State, Gerald, and the Ital Rockers
tracks. But Disc 1 ---yeah, Derrick May, yeah, Phuture ("Acid Tracks" IS
evil!!), but that Juan Atkins track just sucks - a real crap track to
select as being representative of Juan Atkins! The Farley Jackmaster Funk
track on D2 isn't too hot either.
What there is on this double is a lot of jack tracks - "House Sound Of
Chicago" type stuff. But you have to wonder, where's the Sheffield stuff?
No Cabaret Voltaire. Where's the electro influence? Where's the
minimalism? You worry that stuff's getting left out of the big picture
here. At least, I do.
And something else, given the general black cloud hanging over this list
as regards Warp: Why the HELL aren't The Black Dog ANYWHERE to be seen on
the Warp 10 + 2 CD?
I guess it might be some political bullshit involving Plaid. But still,
that's pretty unforgivable...
