I have a Sony MZ-R50 and it's awesome (although no longer a current model).
Avoid the R55 at all costs. Sharp makes some nice models, as does Aiwa.
http://www.minidisc.org/ is a *VERY* thorough resource and
alt.audio.minidisc is helpful too. They should be good starting points.
As for mics, I don't know. I'm still researching them myself.

For anyone who cares, I bought the em:t 2000 2xCD compilation today (used).
It's my first taste of em:t and I'm pretty satisfied so far. Disc 1 is far
better...
