Just picked up some stuff after visiting a local record shop I haven't frequented in some time, much of it older but still unknown and brand new to me (my only listen was the few moments in the shop, so I'm writing this from memory): * NYC Loops 008 (Elektro Music Department) 1997 * Looped minimal techno and dark sounds. * Nick Rappaccio / Agent Cooper split 12" (Vertical Form) 1999 * Moody minimal techno, with a locked groove on one side. Reminded me of a darker Stewart Walker. Don't know these artists, so I couldn't discern one side from the other, which isn't a bad thing. * "Music from the 1970s Television Series _The Hanged Man_ played by Bullet" (DC Recordings) 1998 * Fun, fun, fun. Surprisingly tasteful interpretation of what might have once been cheesey loungefunk from a TV show I've never heard of (and I'm old enough to know better)--perhaps a UK show? Very chilled and subtle, especially when the horns come in just at the right times. Plus some stuff from people I'm more familiar with: * Lithops "Uni Umit" (Sonig) year?? * Six unnamed tracks of spatial texture and moodiness. * Two Lone Swordsmen "A Virus With Shoes" (Warp) 1999 * * Red Snapper "Prince Blimey" (Warp) 1996 * These two were a bit of a leap for me, since I've wandered away from the downtempo vibe in search of sparser spacerock and glitch and ultraminimal techno. The TLS had some nice noisy top layers over the head-nodding hip hop beats. The Red Snapper (2x12) alternated between jazzy breaks and downbeat grooves, and was cheap enough. Not a big Warp fan, but these might be nice to drop in here and there. Another example of a shopping trip where I had hoped to put a dent in my long wish list, only to walk out with stuff I didn't expect. Meanwhile, the list continues to grow . . . (heavy sigh).
