Re-view: Friend / The Sauna Sessions / Dot Records / DOT1206 / Releasedate: 08.29 Tracks: Eklekto (08:02) Rogntudju Chase (06:45) Kites Are Nice (08:55) Kites Are Nice [Outside Link Re-Rub] (06:03) So. Our main drummer Friend is back, with more MIDI data than ever. This 4 track 12" doesn't really continue in the same vein as the earlier "Chromosome For Sale", but instead carries on through the realms of what people call "drill 'n' bass". The first track >>Eklekto<< is without doubt my favorite; beginning like something snatched out of the mo' wax back catalogue, to later continue into clippering woodenspoon (not woodenspoon-pritchard...) drums with floating cutoffed last ninja ennio moriccone melodies from hell. Light and heavy at the same time, hard to explain but, something like a bulldozer on dope dancing ballet. This is - maybe not along the same lines - but at least quality-wise as brilliant as his previous ep. Worth buying the 12" just for this one.

deep basses, floating pads. Not exactly what I'm into, but better than most. Still, the least interesting track on the ep, too ordinary really (you might want to know that I'm dead tired of Drum 'n' BAss). On the flip:

a boring drum n bass track, but this time our Friend has made it into a more special experience. The same electroish touch as the "Chromosome..." ep had, portamento n MS-20. Sorta kinda. Ace anyway, wicked tune, happy shit, blows me away. The Outside "Re-Rub" of this is more a chilled electric double bass experience with not too much of the original version left. More jazzy and much cooler. An almost perfect exit from Friends place. I haven't heard anything else from Outside, but they worked this out pretty nifty. It's a nice slab of vinyl, although I still like his earlier "Chromosome For Sale" better. More electrojazzyclearstuffish - more my thing. Anyway; Another thing worth mentioning is that the sleeves on these 3 new Dot releases are much more appealing than the earlier ones. Especially the new Hab is totally and utterly beautiful; this new Friend isn't too bad either (VERY simply: a mic over a sauna unit), just don't believe anything. Even we swedes don't have saunas sounding as astounding as this. Friend might have, and he must've poured too little water on it when recording >>Rogntudju Chase<< but on the other three tracks the temperature is just perfect. Sweaty stuff form cold Sweden. The knights have made it possible. The knight who say MuMu, Fe. PS. When speaking of Dot; just see to it that you buy the new Hab album entitled "maPOd".
