To me, a "breakbeat" is a beat pattern traditionally used in two contexts: 1) In a song with a repeating simple beat pattern, a breakbeat is when the pattern changes slightly, like a flourish or a fill. It seems special and triumphant in a song. It sounds different from the kind of beat traditionally used in dance music, usually having some fast drum rolls, cymbals, fat pauses. Breakbeat/jungle music uses these types of beats throughout a song, and varying the beat more often than in a techno/house track. 2) A beat designed to provide a bridge between two songs in a DJ set. Actually, the two definitions are very different. Is either one right? Or both? I dunno. I like #1 better.

Here's a question for you all: What the fuck is an Amen break? I always thought that meant a particularly triumphant flourish, but here KaisrSolze seems to refer to it like it was a particular sample or something.

I told you - he CAN rock the house, but since he wants to seem like he's artsy, he likes to put the house to sleep way more often. When you se him spin, make sure it's in a lowbrow context. In a highbrow context, he will try to intellectually impress you with "ambient" music, but in a lowbrow setting he can set your ass on fire. _CF
