I'd like to share a story not so unparallel to the idmlist's as one might first think: people on the punk newsgroups (which, somewhat begrudgingly, I will admit to reading in my younger days) have, FOR YEARS, been arguing about what is and isn't punk....and punk rock isn't even happening anymore! Does anyone really want to be sitting around 10 years from now after IDM is no longer the hot new thing (just as punk once was, albeit with less established foundations) arguing about what is and isn't IDM? The people who argue now about whether or not some band is punk were most likely not in the UK or the USA in 1976 or 1977, yet they show the greatest of unjustifiable fervors when it comes to what's punk and what's not. Do you want to know why? Because they've seen it going on in the newsgroups since day one. So, if we can avoid setting a precedent of allowing pointless arguments, maybe we might be able to prove ourselves slightly more civilized than all those crusty punks. .-------------------------------------------------------------------------. | nm: nickworthington | ml: nworth1@umbc.edu | .25grandizer1wrecktangle | |-------------------------------------------------------------------------| | http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~nworth1 | "Walk softly and carry a big spliff." | `-------------------------------------------------------------------------'
