With all this talk about the popstar image ...
Two days ago I watched a 30-minute documentary on tv about the latest 'craze'
in music, i.e. drum & bass, and was treated to in-depth interviews with Photek,
Source Direct and Squarepusher.
Apart from some minor references to the music, I did learn that Photek drives a
Ferrari, lives in a rather big house, owns some really hi-tech equipment, and
uses all this to sample from marching bands.
Both Source Direct members still live with their parents who complain about the
noise they make, own BMW's and are into beer, driving fast, doing things with
women, bragging about the volume they listen to on their headphones, and using
drugs. Charming blokes.
Squarepusher is just some idiot playing alongside techno dat tapes with his
bassguitar whilst jumping around like a madman although some mention was made
of the fact that he likes jazz, bee-bop and Miles Davis. And we got a chance to
see how he makes the drumpatterns with his computer. For me, the best bits were
the shots of countless Aphex Twin stickers he has plastered on his equipment.
I really wonder what purpose this program served.
