VARIOUS - Detroit: Beyond The Third Wave LP sampler (Astralwerks) The four-track taster for the album which came out last week has the tracks from K Hand (hard, raw and housey), Claude Young (deep, warm and melodic), Sean Deason (soft, throbbing and organic) and Stacey Pullen's Kosmic Messenger (crazy, metallic and frantic). Worth checking the album if Detroit does it for you. HOT LIZARD - Big Air (Pacific) A double-pack remix package from another of the hottest UK techno labels. The original is a smooth, melodic journey, Charles Webster puts a disco cut-up slant on proceedings, Stacey Pullen wins for me with his inimitable take, and Sunrise Society round things off. Not as good as 'Theme', but interesting nonetheless. INTERLOPER - Daddy Vegas (Plink Plonk) Gorgeous production, great sounds and a beautiful feel for this EP from one of Plink Plonk's brightest lights. Hints of Basic Channel stabs, modulating analogue sequences and a superb sense of melody make this a standout for me from recent months. One for the head as well as the feet. SOURCE DIRECT - unknown (Metalheadz 22) The young duo return following the success of 'Secret Liaison' and 'The Crane' with another two cuts of dark, Photekian breakbeat trickery. The A-side is more experimental, with fragmented beats and eerie atmospherics, while the flip will rock the floor with its tough (not Amen) beats and deep, deep bass. Fine stuff. J MAJIK - unknown (Infra Red 6) Another youngster, serving up two slices of cutting-edge breakbeat. The A is an Amen-based atmospheric track, very much in the Photek/Source Direct style, while the flip is more melodic, building with lighter breaks into another stormer. Interesting. see ya ____________________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk you can wear a pair of shoes, but I wouldn't try to eat them ____________________________________________________________
