It's not really common, because any break you make with say, an 808 is
still going to sound like an 808 loop unless you do some heavy duty
processing on it. But, look at Sarcacid 2 or Port Rhombus by
Squarepusher and you'll see lots of drum machine lines (probably 909)
seamlessly integrated with the sampled breaks. Drum machine hi-hats are
used quite a lot with breakbeats though.

I'm pretty sure Photek does indeed make his drum lines from single shots
- there are usually too many variations in the drum lines for them to
come from a single loop. I'm sure the likes of Plug, Photek and
Squarepusher do take an age to compose their drum lines, which is one of
the main reasons why I like the records so much. It's a million miles
away from the chance music and loops of something like Fax, though I'm
sure we could argue forever about their relative merits...

You can still cut up and use single shots from classic breaks, as I've
done with breaks like Amen. Though the best path to take in my opinion
is to sample single hits from new sources (you can get them from any
source, from country to heavy metal, it really doesnt matter) and make
brand new breaks. It's the only way breakbeat and Jungle can progress
and stay fresh.
