The Soup Disk label releases interesting permutations of hip hop. In particular, I find Riow Arai's recent album _Mind Edit_ (and the accompanying 12" EP _Mind Syndicate_) to be especially genre-expanding, with very fresh production; in other words, _Source_ and _Rap Pages_ readers will be baffled and declare it not hip hop at all. So Takahashi's new album on Carpark, _NuBus_, is outstanding--sounds like a brilliant update of the 60s/70s academic electronic composer approach. Atau's _Biorhythm_ (soon coming on Caipirinha) has similarities to the Takahashi LP, but also has some danceable rhythms among the exploratory, hospital ER sounds. An artist by the name of Hiromi (I may be way off) put out some great, fucked-up d&b/electro/hip hop-like tracks on Worm Interface in 99. Bisk is simply godhead. Japan's producing an impressive amount of great electronic musicians. The abovementioned merely scratches the surface of its riches.
