Well, a Coil track was listed among someone's favorites (Autechre I think) on the Artificial Intelligence 1, so, I guess that's reason enough to include them on this list... at least, the "modern" Coil and Elph projects, as opposed to the early wiere stuff...

Yep, it's out definitely, has been for a couple weeks. I found it at my favorite indie shop (Amoeba in Berkeley), and if I can find something, well, anyone can. It's good, if you like the elph releases, on sort of the same lines, though the tracks are a bit more fleshed out and include the odd vocal bit (not just samples, but a couple sung lyrics courtesy of John Balance and Rose McDowell) on a couple of the tracks. No percussion whatsoever except for track three, which features a metallic clank sound like a press or something, with a lot of nice reverb a la SAWII, and drones upon drones upon drones. Some of the tracks remind me of Autechre tracks off "amber"... can't say why exactly, but they just do. They do cite Autechre in the "thanks a whole bunch" section of the strange liner notes (lots of warped photos that look like a morph of the band, a julia set, and some yellow canvas populate the cover/insert). Actually, come to think of it, track two has a kind of beat, as do many of the other tracks, it is just constructed out of water sounds (alot of the material on this album sounds as though it were composed form water sounds). I like it allright; it's not a Love's Secret Domain, that's for sure, but it is better than the elph full length. It has a feel that is very "wintry" I'd say, that seems to be the only way to really describe the album. Check it out but don't go out of your way for it. As far as Coil being "appropriate" for idm discussion, well, who cares... ANYTHING would be preferable to that infernal bootleg issue...
