Law of the Jungle (Moonshine 80016-2) There has been increasing interest among listeners to electronic/techno/ambient listeners in the dance music genres Jungle and Breakbeats The problem has been that the best music is pretty deep underground, or only available in the UK, or both. If you are in the US and want CD's, the pickings are pretty slim. I'm not sure Law of the Jungle rectifies this situation any more than the "History of Our World Part 1" comp does. But there are some very tasty cuts on this disk "Original Nuttah" U.K. Apachi/Shy FX This sounds like your standard Yellowman toasting fest, with the drum tracks run double speed. I give this one a pass. "What's Your Name" by Potential Bad Boy w/MC Det. Wonderful ripping breaks with a grab bag of reggae samples (including the dancehall cut that "Here comes the Hotstepper" rips off), Clint Eastwood samples, plenty of electronic fleeps and floops, 'Dark Side' chime hits; a veritable tossed salad of a cut. "Heartless" Junior Dan. Along the lines of "Original Nuttah" but the guy has the good sense to shut up once in a while and let the breaks roll. "Blow Out Jungle VIP" Bass Selective. A Breakbeat deconstruction of cheeze diva techno. When they cut the diva babe the breaks are fierce, though. Perhaps the image you're supposed to form of the cut is a jungle nutter taking the studio by force during a 2 Unlimited session ... "Elemental" T. Power. After a hokey Boris Karloff intro, dub bass against jungle drums, with some floaty piano and organ fills. And, lest we forget where we are, cracking whip samples. Recommended highly. -- Kent Williams kent@cadsi.com "Swirling a sound [in Quadrophonic Space] at an audio rate produces interesting spatial and modulative effects" -- Serge Modular Product Spec Sheet.
