In the early days of IDM, artists like Autechre, B12 and The Black Dog
combined unusual beat structures with pioneering digital and analog
processing techniques. Gritty beats, lush analog synths, and
granulated "audio mulch" combined to make some of the most timeless
electronic music ever...
Like most other subgenres of electronic music, however, the style came
to be defined more by the tools used than by the aesthetic being
pursued. Soon "IDM" as we know it was produced almost exclusively with
digital processing tools - deconstructing audio via computers. Sonic
experimentation with analog synthesizers became the livelihood of
circuit benders and fringe psychedelic trance artists. Artists like
Alex Patterson and Aphex Twin - both featured on the seminal Artificial
Intelligence compilation - split ways and retreated into these two
camps.
Since then, exponential increases in CPU speed and accompanying
improvements in analog-modeling have reintroduced the analog sound-
palate to primarily digital artists. The characteristically fragile-
sounding sine and square waves often used for melody by IDM artists
have slowly been replaced with thick, polyphonic walls of sound.
Conversely, the wide availability of environments like MAX/MSP and
audiomulch has expanded the horizons of previously analog-centric
artists. The characteristically clean drum-machine percussion used in
psychedelic trance and psy-downtempo has recently been infused with a
crunchy and intricate IDM sensibility.
These two genres seem to be reuniting again - with the same shared goal
of bending and manipulating audio to the most absurd extents possible,
to provide something for the mind on the dancefloor.
Its no wonder that this movement is reviving legendary labels like
em:t and Waveform. This year, were inviting the best of the new breeds
to play at a continuous, 72-hour party in the midatlantic showcasing
the reunion of the genre...
