I apoligize in advance if this album has already been discussed on the list. If not, it should've been...a lot. Has anyone else out there experienced Tipper's "Surrounded" album? In all honesty I think it's one of the most innovative and ambitious projects in electronic music to date. For those of you that don't know of the album it was mixed in 5.1 to DVD Audio, meaning you need a DVD system to play it back. The DVD also contains some video work, some of which does the music justice, but for the most part I would leave the boob tube off, find a decent 5.1 system, smoke a splif and enjoy. I listened both in 5.1 and stereo to compare the "surrounded" effect. After experiencing the 5.1 version I have to say, "why the hell aren't more electronic composers mixing in 5.1!!!". The difference is astounding. The music literally comes to life. Stereo is dead!!!! -Sean (a.k.a. Nordic Soul) P.S. Tipper's first full length "The Critical Path" is one of my favorites to date. Technically one of the most gifted producers in electronic music today. ^(|_|)^ _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. I can barely afford a decent set of stereo speakers, never mind a half decent 5.1 system. I'd like to check it out though, mind if I come over to your house? :) -skkatter ===== http://www.skkatter.net __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! To chime in, yeah this is a good one - the Critical Path was pretty good, but Surrounded is a much more mature album that goes in lots of pretty directions and kind of departs from the washing, bouncy breaks one associates with Tipper. I have only got it in stereo because it's rare that I actually want to sit in one place while listening to the music (ie. sit dead center in the middle of way too many speakers in one place in my house.) Actually i don't even have surround sound at home ... Worth checking out, even if only in meager cheap bastard stereo sound. I wonder if the "Surrounded" show in LA was super disorienting? I think if one were tipsy and listening to a huge surround system it could get kind of ugly ... dave On Tue, 12 Aug 2003, Sean Horton wrote:
