Hi all! I have a situation that I'm kind of perplexed about and I thought I'd ask you folks for any advice you might have. I've been talking to a few different labels about releasing some of my stuff. one label (quatermass) is saying that they want to release an album at the beginning of next year. another label (zod) wants to put one of my tracks on a comp that they have in production right now. the issue is that zod wants exclusivity for the track that they use. the track they want is one of my best and I really feel that it should be on my first album as does quatermass. also they are only going to give me 30 copy's of the comp and no money. there are some good names that are going to be appearing on the comp and they say that it's going to have great distribution, so it may be good promotion for me. another thing is that this comp is right now whereas the album is off in the future and isn't confirmed. also the material that would be on the album isn't complete. I still would need to write around a half hour of new stuff which quatermass hasn't heard yet. does anyone have any advice? I've never dealt with record labels before so I'm kind of confused. also does anyone know anything about either of these record labels? advice on which would be better to get on-board with. -thanks, charlie http://mp3.com/groundchuckles __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? well to start. discussing the labels business on an open email forum is generally a bad idea and may cost you as much as not getting a release with them at all. _twerk On Friday, June 20, 2003, at 01:36 PM, Charles Freeman wrote:

For what it's worth it's generally common practice for comp tracks to be licensed from other labels and appear on full lengths. Get the two labels talking. -a On Friday, June 20, 2003, at 06:05 PM, Shawn Hatfield wrote:

Charles: give the label that is doing the compilation a different edit of the track than the version of that track that will appear on your album. that way each gets a different exclusive version; a note: while some labels might not mind your mentioning names in situations like this, it would be probably in your best interest--in future--to ask questions of this nature without mentioning label names. hope this helps. take care. andrew duke out now: Environmental Politics http://and-oar.org Take Nothing For Granted http://acidfake.tk Sprung http://bip-hop.com http://warprecords.com/mart/music/release.php? cat=BLEEP12&fc_type=CD *Canadian electronica album of the year nominee* More Destructive Than Organized http://staalplaat.com Highest Common Denominator http://pieheadrecords.com Physical and Mental Health http://dialrecords.com 74'02 (split with Hypo) http://tsunami-addiction.com Waveforms: Halifax Electronic Music Compilation http://techno.ca/cognition --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
