Hi -- could use your advice So, for the most part I like IDM and Experimental music. This is already unique itself since it is the "quality over quantity" of music I dig the most. I will be getting an iPod soon, thus need a replacement for those crappy earbuds they come with. Any recommendations as to headphones (perhaps noise cancelling) that would make my idm and experimental tunes sound "great"? Thanks in advance! :-) wnf __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! The Grado SR-60 are excellent, perhaps the best headphones that can easily be driven by a portable rather than an amp. I love mine, although they are an open ear design, so they don't keep out ambient noise much. Definitely check out http://www.headphone.com, they give excellent advice and carry a number of high quality headphones and headphone amps. On Sat, 1 Mar 2003, wownflutter wrote:

You don't need noise cancelling, as they tend to not be of a very high quality anyway and it's more of a "gimmik" than a real solution. You just need a really clear headphone with a complete range. I'd recommend Sennheiser headphones. Me and a half-dozen other people continually recommend them to anyone who asks on the IDM-Making list, and so far, no one's been displeased with their purchase. They make an exceptional headphone for all budgets. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- coming soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD477's, some EH2200's and a pair of Sony MDR-V700's. I got the HD477's first. I've never been happy with them from a comfort perspective, and their sound quality isn't as good as either of the others. The EH2200's sound much better, and are somewhat more comfortable. They cut out ambient noise much better - to the point where I don't hear people speaking to me. I use them at work for that reason :) They also seem much better made than the HD477's. The Sony's are the winners hands down, though. They weigh much more, but have a much more comfortable headband. The Sennheiser's feel like they're made for someone with a much taller, thinner head than I have. These Sony's fit nicely. Sound quality is noticeably richer, with good low tones. Not as much noise blocking as the EH2200's, but I'll trade that for comfort and sound quality. They also feel more solid and well constructed. YMMV, of course. at work I use Beyerdynamic DT-250s. these are nice and they are closed back, which means they don't leak noise and annoy people. i think noise cancelling will probably often mean reduced sound quality so probably a good thing to avoid. for home listening you can never go too far wrong with a pair of Sennheisers, preferably of the open-back variety. http://www.headphone.com has quite a good buyers guide. They also sell but are a bit expensive. cheers, -- Graham Bennett --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

As far as earbuds, I highly recommend the Sennheinser MX500. They are only 15$ and have really, really good quality sound reproduction for a pair of earbuds... compared only to the Sony 888s when I was shopping around. Good base for earbuds, although I think the Sonys are better, and great mids/highs As far as closed ear, you have a lot more options, depending on price range. I'd go listen to a few and pick something that suits you... I use a paid of Sony MDR V-6 for listening which I like just fine. There are some very good sennheinser models and higher quality... depends what your price range is really Chris From: wownflutter <wownflutter@yahoo.com> To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Headphones recommendations (perhaps with iPod) Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 00:04:56 -0800 (PST) Hi -- could use your advice So, for the most part I like IDM and Experimental music. The Grado line, the lower priced ones (under 200$) were very good sounding, especially on the low end... but they give a heavy push to the bass, wouldn't recommend for IDM listening, more for rock. I've tried the Etymotic ER-4S and wasn't too impressed with them. Those are extremely advanced earbud headphones which block outside sounds (REALLY block outside sounds) and send the sound directly into your ear canal. One of my friend raves about them, can get for around 250$ now, I'd compare some hard demos before buying, at that point it will be personal preference, and keep in mind for these to sound fabulous or any other very high end headphones to sound a good step better than "normal" priced you NEED a headphone amp. Try getting a cheap headphone amp and sticking it with some of the headphones you have now, you should notice a pretty big difference on the sounds you were missing. Unless you're a real audiophile, I wouldn't recommend anything over around 400$, the amount of difference you are going to see just won't be that huge. The others I liked, Sennheinser HD 580s, will give you everything you want for IDM, going to pick up a pair of those myself soon. I've tried them in comparison to the HD 600s (which cost 200$ more) and noticed a little difference without using an amp, but definitly not 200$ worth. I'd spend the extra to get a decent headphone amp and leave it at that. headphone.com is a great recommendation to check for products, check ebay for a headphone amp, and do just a little research to figure out which aren't total crap. Oh, and if money truly isn't an object... go check out the Sennheiser Orpheus... something like 12K$ for the system... for $100 you can get sony mdr 7508s (or others in that line)... cost/quality comparison there is no competition from akgs or sennheisers i think (those are the brands i listened to)... plus they are rugged and built to be abused, very much unlike most sennheiser models i've seen which felt like i would break them soon after i came to own them. they are studio monitor headphones though which may be a turn off (very flat freq response - i prefer it personally) and i find they take a lot of juice to be loud... ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? That's one of the big things I've always looked for in a decent pair of headphones; only time I really use them is with portable devices where "loud" isnt loud enough <g>. I had a pair of Sennheisers, and although they were awesome quality, I could hardly hear anything unless it was plugged into an amplifier or such. Still trying to look for the perfect pair of headphones that are ideal for portable devices - reasonably small/non-geeky looking, sound reasonably loud'ish, and the sound reproduction is both clear and with some decent bass. I've never found a pair that seems to do all this - I remember using some wierd brand ages ago that sounded awesome, but they were almost bigger then my face. :-( R - -- - Ryan Verner <xfesty@computeraddictions.com.au> PGP: 5819 DE5D B5AE 9381 7E60 5B4C 45CC 64DF D3CC EB07 ICQ: 76626240 IRC: xf / irc.oublinet.net PH: +61 418 186 604 EQ: Mummer (Bard), Tholuxe In the beginning the Universe was created.
