Quick report. Tortoise were fab. Boards of Canada were fucking amazing. They played for 1 hour, and only 3 tracks I knew. The whole set seemed to be mostly new stuff, and are we all in for a treat when the album comes out! Just, well, just wait! Prefuse 73 were well cool - Whoever the MC was had a funny go at the spotters with "They like being stared at" (they being the Prefuse boys, as there were 2 of them live) Ae. sounded funky, but I had to leave. Oh, Broadcast renewed my faith in the live band shit. Gotta love England! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I concur, somewhat. Tortoise were brilliant. Boards of Canada brilliant. Broadcast were great. Def Jux Posse were great and seemed quite out of place since they were entertaining the crowd, not jerking off musically. This brings me to my gripe with the weekend. Most of the bands didn't seem to be there for their "fans" but were instead just up there making noise. Major culprits: Authechre, Television, Stereolab and Tortoise DJs (playing Whitney Houston may be tres-ironic but I heard the same track three times over the weekend bringing it to five times in the last week or so). These bands and DJs need to remember they're entertainers. An hour of wanking on stage isn't very exciting, although the turtleneck crowd seemed to be into it. Organisation was a bit lacking. 100 quid tickets and no way to get from the train station to the festival except a once-per-hour bus (the normal town bus) or one of the six taxis in town? Our "four berth chalet" ended up being four beds of six people in the room meaning we were meant to share with two strangers, until we kicked up a stink. -- Rev Simon Rumble Current physical location: London, UK simon@rumble.net http://www.rumble.net Prejudice: A vagrant opinion without visible means of support. -- Ambrose Bierce --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yea... looks a tad disappointing. That's what you get for putting Steve Albini in charge of curating. I remember reading some interview or something with him in a book a while back and he was slamming the use of sampling as not being a legitimate way of creating music. He went on to bash recording digitally and how its got to be on analog tape or whatever. However, this was from sometime in the early nineties or something so I'm sure he's had to rethink his whole elitist stance on all that stuff. It wouldn't be very cool and "indie" to hate on people using protools or cubase to record their stuff DIY and avoiding the tremendous costs of an analog studio. At least they've got Melt Banana playing. They fucking rock the house. -Aaron

Most of the bands playing i really liked a couple of years ago. Some of them i still love but i can't see the point in programming these. At least LA got Dead C, which i bet is going to blow away all Idm'ers, and indie-kids. I think it's wiser to start save money to go to La then crossing the channel to see All Tomorrow's parties anno 1988-94 in england.

Jesus man, disappointed?? THREE performances by Shellac per weekend...why you can't even count that on the fingers of one hand! Not to mention Blonde Redhead, Dianogah, The Fall (!), Low, Melt Banana, Mission of Burma (after what, 18 years?!?), The Oxes, Tom Verlaine...besides electronic music isn't 'real' music anyhow...and on a serious note it's usually painfully boring live (let's not start the discussion again). This show puts Sonic Youth's American ATP to shame. I wouldn't think twice about attending were I to be a resident of the UK. -Nathan

I agree with the fact that the line up sucks. What's the big deal about Blonde Redhead, they tour like 5 times a month or something like that. The Fall maybe... dont know where they're at right now, I am sure they are burned out and faded by now. Shellac was exciting like 5 years ago. Dinogah is boring, or at least what i heard of them. I agree with whoever said Melt Banana rocks the house... otherwise, blah... I am glad that someone is excited about this and all that. But why do you have to be so irritating and sneak in that comment about electronic music being boring live, not being real music, etc. I know some people really enjoy being annoying and all that (a lot on this list apparently), and I hope that you are receiving the appropriate tinglies for that little stab... And why are you on an electronic music list anyway? For shock value? (Please dont answer that, it was a rhetorical and thought provoking question not intended to begin any boring discussion) sorry, sorry, may gods punish me for all eternity for being unable to resist responding to this.

Actually, the use of rhetorical questions is precisely to encourage further discussion. They're not "unanswerable," just simply not answerable with a short, concise answer. They're questions used to aid in the art of persuasion, and their standard form is often followed by a slight discourse by the interrogator. For instance, a real use of a rhetorical question, in this context, would be as follows: And why are you on an electronic music list anyway? Badmouthing the main topic of the list is nothing new, and often encouraged, but just adding an offhanded comment like you did only makes it look like you are an elitist snob who assumes electronic music puts on a poor show without any examples to back it up. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- everyone's doing it --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually, your post was quite mild compared to what I expected Nathan to receive in response to the "Electronic music isn't real music anyways" comment. Besides, IMHO it doesn't take much to put Sonic Youth to shame anyways (opinionated comment). Now, on-topic: Has anyone else besides me heard the Mate EP - I believe it's an untitled EP with 6 tracks on it. Jetlag/jg004 is the label/cat #, and it was released in 2000. Excellent first track!!!!! stab... Well actually I was being facetious about the 'real music' bit...as you'll notice by reading the "and on a serious note" comment directly afterwards. You know, seeing as Albini fucking hates sampling...as in I was mocking his attitude. Next time I'll draw a picture. I do find most electronic acts boring live (save Autechre, Kid606 and a few local acts). In the context of discussing the lack of electronic acts in a festival setting (i.e. LIVE) I simply wanted to express my opinion about the subject without starting endless debate about a topic that's been played out. Seems completely on topic to me. So I'm not sure how that was perceived as an irritatingly sneaky jab...whateva. I assure you the tingly sensation I'm feeling at the moment has naught to do with my message.

Well I suppose the fact that I was ranting about 'rock' bands and was then misinterpreted would lead to this question. Answer should be obvious tho. -Nathan P.S. :D Granted, I've wondered if All Tomorrow's Parties were ever really geared towards electronic music. Although electronic music is definitely different from most other types of live performance, I've never heard about an experience that went over well for a huge crowd. The sound is *never* good outside like that, you can't see what's going on (not that much usually is, even with rock bands). It's just always seemed like more of an "indie thing" to me. Has anyone been to a really GOOD big outdoor electronic show? And I don't mean any of those lame trancy things, or anything where you were obligatorily drugged in order to perceive some faint enjoyment with the music. And you gotta love big-shot producers who are so anti-sampling yet throw strings into big ballady songs. Yea, they know how to barely play a guitar, and suddenly there's a violin? or 3, or 6! The violins are out of control! ------- eggytoast.com ------- everyone's doing it --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Lamb were good when I saw them in central park (though it was a very short set). I'm also given to understand that underworld are good in open air shows, though I've only seen them inside. Of course, both of these might be said to have a certain amount of popular appeal in their music. In fact, with the amount of ringing I hear these days when things are quiet, I'd almost rather see acts outside. Some of the places where indoor shows I've seen have been may have had good acoustics, but I can't really think of a [non-classical, non flecktones] concert that used them all that effectively. And most of them you can't see what's going on, either. Maybe I've just been to the wrong shows. -kyle r On Tue, Dec 04, 2001 at 08:51:20PM -0600, EggyToast wrote:

Underworld @ The Coachella Festival '99. It sounded great, looked great, & there was plenty of interaction with the audience. It was one of the best live performances I've ever seen, electronic or otherwise. --- EggyToast <youn0394@umn.edu> wrote:

Just read on the ATP site that all the 4/5 berth chalets are gone. I was having a large amount of trouble rounding up three other people to share with, never mind 5 or 6! If anyone has a spare berth in their chalet I'd gladly give them the cash for the ticket. I am clean and great. Plus I can cook like a motherfucker. I haven't kept track of ATP, but do you NEED friends to go along or can you just go and get matched up with other stragglers/smaller groups?

No, you need to book the whole chalet. I managed to convince all my flatmates to go to make up the numbers I needed So who else on this list is going? I was gonna suggest one of those meet up things, but you all seem a bit weird to me :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
