This glitch-meets-roots dub thing is one of my favorite microgenres, and has been since I heard the awesome Pole "CD1".. Stefan Betke really rules the roost, and you should swing by his label (~scape) website and have a listen to the samples off the many excellent releases, you're bound to find something you like: http://www.scape-music.de/ I am particularly fond of Deadbeat - "Wild Life Documentaries" and the s/t System album (scape015 and scape013, respectively), Deadbeat being perhaps a bit more roots and System more on the glitch tip. One of the three members of System, as the web text will tell you, also has recorded as Dub Tractor. I have the "An evening with dub tractor" album and there are some good tracks on it, quite comparable to Bill Laswell's "Dub Chamber" excursions. (Electro and fusion influenced with smooth deep basslines) ~scape related, but off on his own tangent, Kit Clayton's superb "Nek Sandalet" (scape003) has huge reverb and nice organic touches. For me however it's his mostly-ambient "Lateral Forces" on Vertical Form (VFORM006) that knocked my socks off: when the bubbling organ and dub drums kicked in on part six, I was convinced I'd found the apex of the genre -- work that kept in mind dub's origins in Lee Perry's Jamaican labs while exploiting the possibilities of laptop-glitch DSP. Track down some Vladislav Delay (especially "Vapaa Muurari" under his Uusitalu guise) and the Chain Reaction backcatalogue for dub-meets-house sounds. The NYC "illbient" scene also delved into dub at times, there are a couple of compilations in the "Land of Baboon" series on Baraka Records that are worth checking out. And I'm sure other people will chime in either flaming me for recommending this stuff or contributing their own favs... have fun. -- Eric Sorenson - EXPLOSIVE Networking - http://explosive.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hmmm.... Sandoz - Chant to Jah is pretty dubby electronic music as are a lot of releases under this Richard H. Kirk pseudonym. Stereotyp - My Sound (on G Stone Records) has been getting rave reviews. Check out Select Cuts From Nation compilation (i think it might be dubby but havent listened to it in a while). And I got this Jamaican Records Dub Sampler volume 1 released in 2002. Also Braindub - In Your Brain is an album I like for electronic music meets dub. And maybe Witchman versus Jammin Unit - Inferno That's all I can think of off the top of my head... For the more glitchy dub -I have been listening to System and Deadbeat on scape.I was also just turned on to polycubist/dubloner - a split 12" - really nice and deep scratchy, sometimes glitchy dub.Latley I have been listening to alot of mad professor, some of it is really wierd shit, gets very noisey at times. lanceR --- StaticBeats <idm-list@staticbeats.com> wrote:

I enjoy this release quite a bit but am always irritated by the apparent clipping and distortion. Am I imagining it, or did they push their levels up too hot while recording? out there? it seems like something that would be of interest. I second (third?) the recommendations for Deadbeat's 'Wild Life Documentaries': IMO, that is the finest ~dub~ thing on ~scape to-date. Timeblind on Orthlorng Musork is worth checking out: album 'Rugged Redemption' is right-on; 'Most Eye, The Rastabomba Remixes' is very good stuff: includes kid606 and Kit Clayton remixes. Old-school glitch dub: Blackbeard - 'I Wah Dub'. This is a *phenomenal* record: Dennis Bovell is Blackbeard: he did this album in 1980: LP back-cover fine-print warning: 'This Record is Scratched'. ;) (The cover listed 1980 as the pub-date, however 'p. 1978' is on the label: 1980 was the actual year of release, AFAIK.) Around this same time, Bovell produced the Slits - 'Cut' and Linton Kwesi Johnson's 'Forces of Vicktry': both great records, too. He used sound effects all over the place, particularly on 'I Wah Dub': creaking doors, yawning lions, back-scraaaactcheeeeeed madness! The Slits single, 'Typical Girls', is worth looking up, for the 'Brink Style Mix' of the title track, if not also for the cover of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'. 'I Wah Dub' was re-released on CD by LKJ, on his LKJ Records label, in 2000: it is credited to Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell on this re-release: the LP credited Blackbeard: Rastanaut. (and 'Sound Effects:Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London'.) From this same period, also not-to-be-missed: Prince Far-I - 'Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3'. 'Play This Loud': no doubt! Amazing. Deeeeep. Gravel-voiced, dub master Prince Far-I: sorely missed. Amongst the players: David Toop (flute) and Steve Beresford (toy synthesizer, melodica, various whistles). Ari Up/Slits (vocals). Full-length mp3s of this one are available here: http://www.princefari.com/main.htm?http%3A//www.princefari.com/discography/p scd007.htm or http://snurl.com/npi God Bless Daddy Kool! ;) I wasn't impressed by the Stereotyp album, 'My Sound': a bit too heavy on the dancehall tip. However, the Dub Club 2000+1 compilation, also on G-Stone, is a good one. A relatively-new, similarly-styled comp: Meteosound 003: on Meteosound/Select Cuts: Dntel, Fehlmann/Morgenstern, Rechenzentrum, Rootsman, etc: nice. http://www.meteosound.net/m3/f_m3.html (The Witchman versus Jammin' Unit thing, 'Inferno', mentioned earlier is good.) Even better than 'Inferno', though: much better, IMO: Jammin' Unit's 'Deaf, Dub and Blind', which the cover of 'Inferno' lists as its inspiration. 'Deaf, Dub and Blind' is wicked: 'The Story of Brad Wilson (4 E's)', 'Handbag Dub', 'Blind Television', 'Stomach Trouble Dub' (mixes well with 'Typical Girls/Brink Style' ;)) all stand out on this one. On Blue Planet/Instinct; 1997. Jammin' Unit's 'Are You Prepared?' was not as impressive as the earlier 'D,D + B', but among it finer moments is 'Dropout Dub': that one is tuff. Unlike 'D,D + B', 'Are You Prepared?" is not all dub tracks: the other dubs on this one: 'Serious Shutdown', 'Cube Dub', 'Garyleptic' (sorta). Pharma/EFA; 1998. Jammin' Unit's first full-length dub foray was on Rising High: 'Jammin' Unit Discovers Chemical Dub', released in 1995: decent, mixable, dub tracks, most-suitable for the dancefloor. Of course, Pole 1, 2, and 3 are all recommended for that glitched-out dub sound you seek. 1 (Red) and 3 (Yellow) are the favourites here. The ~scape compilation, 'Staedtizism', the first one in that series, is also recommended: Vladislav Delay, Fehlmann, Pole, Jorg Burger, Sun Electric, Bernd Friedmann, etc: compiled by Pole; 2000. I ~love~ the RHK/Sandoz - 'In Dub: Chant to Jah' album. (Despite the funky distortions. ;)) Don't miss that one. .o0O}seeklektek{O0o. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Something I have recently discovered, which suffers relative obscurity due to virtually squat information on the cover is LENA's album "Lane" on Quatermass. Odd covershot of people in a river disappearing towards a black hole. Altogether, nothing about the cover would suggest the hidden joys within! A bit of research reveals that it's actually from France and by somebody called Mathias Delplanque, who released another album in 2000 under the name "Bidlo". Think : BC/CR; Pole, Maurizio, Monolake, Jan JelineK, Burnt Friedman, Kit Clayton. Very very recommended, if you are vaguely into the above sound. out there? it seems like something that would be of interest. If you want glitch, go back to the source and hear real deal crackles and hiss. Of course, Lee Perry, but my vote is for King Tubby, who's a bit more expansive, who's cool with a pretty little piano solo in the middle of the din, and who seemed to take more time with dubs than Perry did. I'm not knocking Lee Perry — without him, where would we be? — but damn if Tubby doesn't get my imagination working overtime more often. And as far as new stuff, I love the Sandoz record on Soul Jazz; where Pole and ~scape stuff is more contemplative, Sandoz just barrels through the dubs with a ton of momentum. Yeah, I get your point, which is one reason why this one's interesting to me. It's obvious that Richard Kirk (who many may know as one of the founders of Cabaret Voltaire) has listened to his fair share of the classic stuff; he understands it, and harnesses that understanding to use with rhythms that are pretty unclassicdublike (that's a word, right?) — synthetic, almost Dancehall-y shuffle-step beats. And the tension between the contemplation inherent in 70s dub and the momentum of 21st century rhythms moves the record in interesting directions --definitely more interesting than Tortoise's wank-off takes on dub. If I wanna listen to dub, I'm gonna hit the classic stuff; if I want to hear someone who understands dub, but is interested in taking it in new directions, Sandoz is cool — especially if, like your tag says, you play dub and dancehall. This hits both without being derivative. Not much hard step, though. luv, Randall Roberts the Lou, Mo.

Sandoz just barrels through the dubs with a ton of momentum.
