No particular reason, but after digging through some old non-IDM tunes in an effort to listen to some music that had been shelved for awhile I came across some great stuff that I almost had forgotten about. Almost... DJ Spooky - "Riddim Warfare" - a very pivotal album for me a few years back. Can't really explain just why, but damn this stuff is good. Just like the title suggests. Sade - "Love Deluxe" - good shit, just damn good. If you have a significant other and you are quarreling, this should set it straight. Saw Sade this past summer and her voice was simply mesmerizing. Melting, really. And she carries herself as the epitome of a strong, sensual, confident woman. Sexy as hell. Al Green - "Live in Tokyo" - I swear, if you haven't heard this album then you are really missing out. Just the shit old Reverend Al says to the crowd between sets is priceless. This album's version of "Love and Happiness" is one of the most pimp tracks I think I have ever heard, and that's a bold statement. A Tribe Called Quest - "Low End Theory" - quite possibly the best hip-hop album of all time? Enough said. Led Zeppelin - "Tangerine" - not a big fan of the group at all, but this track was the essence of growing up with my mother's record collection available. Jim Croce - "Time in a Bottle" - Sounds cheesy, I know - BUT, this shit touches a nerve somehow. Smashing Pumpkins - "Mayonnaise" - Epic. One of those tracks that I have no qualms about blazing at top decibel levels and jamming to with my sweetride imaginary electric guitar. It's red and shiny. Sorry if this might be a tad off topic, but just thought I would share in the hopes that maybe a few folks might dig one of these gems up and give it a listen again and maybe get the same feeling from it that I did. Would like to hear similar findings from others. Everyone has roots in something that led to them being on this list, so I am always curious as to others' influences. Sorry again, hope this wasn't too off topic. Rediscovery is a wonderful thing, ya dig? JS

"Al Green" is my preferred euphemism for marijuana. As in: "Gather round, Al Green's in town!" Or: "I've got tickets to see Al Green." So Funny. (To me, leastways.) absofuckinlutely. Same window, different visual: 1. The Smiths - everything. Now I know how these guys became my favorite band in 7th-8th grade...I just listened to "louder than bombs" and have since pulled out every album for a listen. "There is a light that never goes out" is one of the best songs of all time (for all you bleeding-heart dramatics). 2. ? and the mysterions - 96 tears. If you think those NY kids of today have style (interpol, strokes, blah blah blah), peep Mr. ?. Legally named "?," this cat epitomizes the 60s garage band mod hipness which seems to be such an influence all of a sudden...but hell, what's to be improved on? This tune makes it happen. 3. slowdive - souvlaki space station. Not exactly non-IDM anymore, at least in its apparent influence, this tune was absolutely everything to me when it came out. Almost singlehandedly, this tune mapped out my "effects aesthetic" for years to come. Bring back the Reading Dub! 4. joy div. - dead souls. Can't claim to have been into these guys while they were in existence as joy division--hell, they formed before I was born and died before I could speak an intelligble sentence; but like any good dark youth I got exposed to Ian C. and the crew. This song is somehow special for me, I guess just nostalgically, but it seems like each element in this song works really well with the others--each part rocks. Turn on the bright lights, and see some epileptic glory. 5. Midnight Star - no parking on the dancefloor. Keerist, get a copy of this album if you don't have one already! Absolute classics here. Electro and slow jams stand side by side in early 80s style--as cheesed out as possible. See the future of electro in its nascent state.... 6. Kraftwerk - computer world. Yeah, not exactly non-IDM here. I rate computer world as my favorite K. album, regardless of the experimentalism of "Radioactivity" and legion of "trans-europe express." Computer world rules all, not exclusively b/c of its Huxlean foreshadowing of our current powerlessness (ha! IDM content sneaks in there). Ben np - black moon - make munne __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
