Yeah, I've finally got mad enough to consider purchasing something from Merzbow. Rather than buying the whole 200 cd catalogue of his, however, I'm intending to purchase just one album of brutal noise terror. So, to ensure that this one cd is selected with care, your suggestions would be helpful. Naturally the album should be absolute prime Merzbow and diverse enough to make an interesting listen. I've heard '1930' praised quite a lot, would that be a good purchase? 'Tauromachine', 'Music for Bondage Performance 2', 'Venerology' and 'Dharma' have also caught my eye, how decent are they? Then there's the Merzbow and Russell Haswell collaboration 'Satanstornade', which has received a few pretty good reviews, would that be a good pick? I would also be interested in other noise suggestions as well, not just Merzbow. thanks, |visa k. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

"1930" would indeed be a good choice. I'm not a Merzbow fan by any stretch of the imagination, but among the releases/excerpts/tidbits I've heard, it seemed the most interesting to me, by a fair margin. g. -- Guillaume Grenier - grenier.g@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Define 'prime merzbow.' Merzbow has changed a lot over the years. I wouldn't call myself much of an expert (i don't know who is... his backcatalog has a lot more than 200 records in it), but I'd say it really depends what you want out of noise.

Seeing that you are on the IDM list, i would say buy scumtron (unless that's too obvious an answer). two tracks of blistering power noise which you can hear on an album of otherwise awesome (and much more accessible) stuff, thus not wasting your money (see below)... and the awesome stuff is pretty durn awesome - panasonic sound heavier than ever, autechre's track quite simply rules (too long though, but whatever), and russell haswell's track almost isn't there (or maybe that's rehberg and bauer's track... i forget.) of the ones you asked about, i would pick 'music for bondage performance (1 or 2)'. they're quite beautiful sometimes; prolly my most listened to merzbow records. Ambientish - just sounds, really. venerealogy is a dumb record and you will feel dumb if you buy it (i did). it's just loud and horrible (he released a lot (a whole lot) of records like this, in his 'power noise' phase in the 90s. approach with caution and a firm grip on your wallet). it does make a good weapon, however, being mastered many decibels louder than anything else i've ever owned, even high rise. tauromachine i have heard good things about (apparently it has rhythms?) but have not heard. 1930 is an interesting record..... heard it once, remember liking it a lot. i am a big fan of the earlier, 'junk music' style merzbow... just kind of banging on instruments, throwing concrete blocks around, etc. "deus irae" with null is good - there are a couple out there still available i think. your mileage may vary (intensely). my favorite akita thing by far is the cd he did under his own name, 'the prosperity of vice, the misfortune of virtue'. along the lines of music for bondage performance, but more varied, clearer sounds (lots of world sounds). unsettling, wonderful. too bad i don't own it and it's probably unavailable. actually i take that back... my favorite akita release is actually this record called grav - book of a thousand hands or something like that, with PGR and asmus tietchens. big slabs of sound, very still, reminds me of stone... i haven't heard it in years but i think i'll go listen to it right now... unfortunately i think it was already long out of print when i bought it from a cut out bin in high school, but if you see it around...

Of the three Merzbow releases I've purchased. '1930', 'Music for Bondage Performance 2' and 'Door Open at 8 am',, the only recording I've ever found my self going back to is 'Door...'. It is Merzbows homage to jazz drummers. As such, it incorporates a lot of samples from older jazz recordings. Because of the samples, there is a stronger presence of things like 'beat', 'melody', and 'song structure'. Attributes which Akita has often been too willing to forgoe in other recordings. -Ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "visa k" <v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, December 14, 2002 6:14 PM Subject: [idm] Merzbow

I personally prefer "Venereology" over the rest that I've heard. it was the first Merzbow album i heard and it's totally brutal. it does the job and it does it right. i know someone on here has already criticized this release as being worthless but i can't disagree more. if you want some real noise then stick with this one... also Masonna's "Inner Mind Mystique" which also came out on Release/Relapse around the same time is similar. it is the solid, oversaturated noise that I consider "prime Merzbow" so stick with Venereology, Pulse Demon or maybe Tauromaschine... for more varied Merzbow I would recommend the Scumtron remixes as they include 2 originals (noise) alongside reconstructions by Autechre, Panasonic, Bernhard Guenter, etc... definitely not a noise record overall. A more recent album that I enjoyed a lot is "Amlux" on Important which has a lot more dynamics to it. I would also recommend the Karkowski collaborative release "mazk" which came out about 5+ years ago.... Amlux is honestly the only thing I've picked up in years but it's worth it... I would agree that a couple of Merzbow discs will most likely satisfy any yearning you have for harsh noise... although the Haswell disc that was released some time last year (solo, not the new Warp collab) is pretty damn scary and worth hearing at least once. Also, there was an album by Sshe Retina Stimulants (supposedly related to Sigullum S) that came out in maybe 95-96 (can you tell this is when I was into noise mostly?) and it's fantastic. it's called "ketsueki no eiga" and was released on Self-Abuse records.... I believe they have had material out on Ant-Zen in the meantime although I haven't followed it closely in any way.... m.mercer :: design + sound design :: http://www.matthewmercer.com/ sound :: http://www.mattmercer.com/

Ok, well... for Merzbow if you are lazy just get something put out by Relapse. If you don't mind going the extra mile for good noise then try to find Noisembryo or Greenwheels both are brutal and interesting and Greenwheels comes with an extra 5" vinyl single and all the track titles are stupid and funny. Another amazing recording is New Takamagahara which is deep spacy moog and theremin noise. I've got some of the more recent stuff and I got a few really old tapes recently but haven't had a chance to go over them, but older stuff is usually much less dense clangy noise improv and newer stuff is digital crispy loops... For other noise stuff try Hijokaidan or Incapacitants for wall of noise brutality. For more dynamic works go for Government Alpha, or K2. All are fantastic (unfortunately Alpha really likes high pitched stuff, I prefer crunchy bass sounds), except stay away from live recordings unless you are a diehard nerd... like me... they are usually far less dynamic and have inferior sound quality. If you want spacy noise search out works by ex CCCC member Hiroshi Hasegawa's project ASTRO, deep minimal trance inducing stuff. I'll be releasing a CDR of his soon on my label. Buy it. If you want random weirdness go for Gerogerigegege which runs the gamut from noise to piano improv to grindcore to field recordings. Finally if you want guitar noise (not that interesting to me, but...) try Solmania. Hope that helps a bit. K.K. Null, "Inorganic Orgasm" got a tremendous amount of complaints for me. They asked me to stop playing it because it sounded too much like a disk drive undergoing a head crash. The sound made them panic. It is not very much an IDM recording though. I suppose we should mention Lesser's Gearhound which is IDM *and* noise in one convenient package!!! I was impressed by Gearhound because it was very good at the noise game, which is to bury very conventional musical structure in what seems an incoherent jumble of grating sounds. Good stuff!! -Ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Rogerson" <nickrogerson@attbi.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, December 15, 2002 11:11 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Merzbow

both have eraldo bernocchi, i believe.

yes, and what i heard of it was pretty good, if you like that grey sort of scary lo bit rate noise (i do sometimes). ant-zen is worth looking into generally, just avoid anything with lyrics. you can get mechanized death machine pounding noise, noise of the aforementioned grey, lo bit rate, and scary variety, or ambient noise... (you can also get some pretty terrible industrial style bleach gargling (aka 'vocals'), but i try to forget that part of ant-zen since otherwise it's such an amazing label). re: other noise recommendations... well for list relevance you could hear the new whitehouse record Cruise (mr. r.d. james has taken to playing various tracks from it at various appearances - there is a funny review here: http://www.warprecords.com/news/?offset=0&ti_id=314 "unnecessary, exploitative and cheap" in reference to the song "public" by peter sotos and steve albini). it's better than other ones. that is, if supporting music with lyrics about the numerous joys of lovely topics like rape and excrement (unintelligibly processed, but carefully printed in the booklet for your reading pleasure) doesn't contradict yr moral code. i am a big fan of aube. one sound source per album. he also has a ton of records; cardiac strain (heart noises) is good and may still be available on alien8, but it's not very balls out. Wired Trap is very much balls out, but prolly not around. Ground Zero (and anything involving Otomo Yoshihide really) is kind of where it's at for music (or whatever) that is *brutal* and fun and very intelligent. Consume Red (one of the more visionary records of recent times, but executed with clear purpose and intent, thus making it hard to call "noise") and Revolutionary Pekinese Opera and Null & Void all highly recommended (in that order), but be aware they have a japanese psych/free jazz slant (trust me, it's way cooler than that sounds)... mutilated in postproduction. His records under his own name are inexplicably enjoyable but very intense... prolly better to listen before buying. silence ... silence ... CRAKCKSNAPKRR ... silence ... etc. masonna does not work for me. gerogerigegege are occasionally fun to hear. Christian Marclay albums are brainy and not (usually) particularly hard to listen to but they are quite wonderful. Records 85-92 or something is my favorite, but i seem to like everything he does. i like zeena parkins (or is that just 'free jazz')... iannis xenakis has some good (and rugged) records. really that's not even scratching the surface - noise is not very hard to make and thus there are a lot of quality records (and far more worthless ones). ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
