Artist: Funckarma Title: Bourbon Sounds Label: Delikatessen Records Catalog #: Plate 4 Release date: 29th October 2002 Tracklisting single side a1 Noir a2 Sphere malted side b1 Velvet b2 Sparkzz Funckarma www.funckarma.com "Whiskey can be an inspirator and neutralizer for us...(but) getting so so so sick off whiskey once a year makes you realize that (other forms of mind alteration) aren't so bad at all..." --Funckarma Well line up the shot glasses and start a tab, 'cos the bar at Delikatessen is uproarious at the news that beat breakers Funckarma are in the HOUSE! Bourbon Sounds is the drunken duo's first round for Delikatessen and man, it packs a punch. Funckarma's complex synthesizer-centric melodies and similarly complex rhythmic structures place them somewhere between the zesty hip-hop aromas of early Funkstorung and the single malt scotch smoothness of late Bola. And they're not afraid to venture into symphonic realms as evidenced on their Djak-Up-Bitch album Solid State, which at times sounds like Future Sound of London before they went on a bender. But on Bourbon Sounds, there's a balance of both. Have a little swig of "Noir" and "Velvet," both of which begin with a frenetic, jittery percussive burn but develop a rich, creamy aftertaste of triumphal electronic strings. If you like your spirits aged, try "Sphere" for its high-arching leitmotif with hints of Autechre's piquant "Kalpol Introl" blended with the woody majesty of Speedy-J's "Ginger." And for a proper nightcap, slip into something more comfortable like "Sparkzz," a syncopated broken beat concoction which warms slowly like a winter fire, seeping deep into your brain with images of otherworldly bliss just before you black out. No wait, that was just the run-out groove. Someone call a taxi, everyone at the Deli is sloshed on the Bourbon Sounds of Funckarma! About the Chefs: Funckarma's brotherly team of Don and Roel Funcken were so damned hammered when we talked to them last, they couldn't tell us much about themselves. So, here's what we've been able to glean from their incoherent slobbering: they're in their late 20s, from the Netherlands and have been making music for over two years under the names Funckarma and Cenik for labels ranging from Djak-Up-Bitch, U Cover, Music Aus Strom and Neo Ouija to Isophlux, Toytronic, Eat This and n5MD. Roel said something about being a former Dutch national DJ finalist when he was just thirteen and having studied "Sonologie" at university, while Don may or may not have been in the IT industry in some capacity. We just don't know as they both passed out a few minutes ago. Lush people making lush music for sure! About the Deli: Delikatessen are proud to offer up the best in electronic, experimental, and wicked-bad sonic foodstuffs this side of a piece of vinyl. Delikatessen promises each Plate will be chock-full of all the delicious electronics your turntable can handle, and that the choons will fill you up like Thanksgiving at grandma's. Come back to the Deli (www.delikatessen-records.com) often because you never know what's gonna be on the menu! deli-europe : chocolate@delikatessen-records.com deli-u.s. : enchilada@delikatessen-records.com deliweb : www.delikatessen-records.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
