I would like to get a portable recording device so I can capture all of the fascinating sounds I hear in every day life and incorporate them into my music. Which do you prefer? Dat or Minidisc? Which has a better internal mic? Or an inexpensive external one? Which is the better deal for my money? What about the recording medium? Are minidiscs cheap to buy? Any other input will be appreciated. Thanks, Tom Cyn

Minidiscs, definitely. The best things DAT are for is high quality studio recording, not field recording. Sure, you can use them for that, but it's sort of a waste as quality is dependent entirely on the microphone in field recordings. I use a minidisc recorder for field recordings and have never thought "man, I should get a more expensive unit so I can do this exact same thing with identical results." Sometimes I've thought about buying a better microphone, though :) You'll have to get an external mic, but, for example, I use a Sony stereo mic, ECM-MS907, that's small and has worked great for me. Plus, minidisc is smaller and last longer on batteries. And with fewer moving parts. For cheaper. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- kills germs on contact --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

minidiscs are way better, more protable, cheaper to buy and easy to use and for those on a really tight budget, you can plug the headphones that come with it into the mic slot and get a fairly decent stereo recording, not sure if it kills the headphones though? probably. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I would have to say MD. They are cheaper and have great sound quality. There are alot of choices when it comes models of MD recorders and field recording on them is really nice. They are small and durable, mine has taken alot of beatings and lived through it. Try to test both mediums out and find the one that is right for you in the long run.
