for immediate release New Gallery Opens To The Public 9/27 Seth Nehil - BASKET: Black Walnut Drawings September 27-October 19, 2002 Opening Reception: Thursday, October 3, 6-9PM Performance: Seth Nehil - Saturday, October 5, 8PM Performance: KMH (Berlin/Tokyo) / Twine (OH) / Solenoid (OR) Sunday, October 6, 7PM ($5.00 Suggested Donation for Performances) Artist/Composer Seth Nehil inaugurates the opening of Soundvision gallery with a collection of recent geometric drawings made from the ink of black walnuts. Lines upon lines, hand drawn, launch various organic components built from improvised centers. Nehil, who has collaborated with Michael Northam, John Grzinich and Olivia Block will perform an intimate and rare set of electroacoustic sounds from recent recordings, including stria (Erewhon, Belgium) and umbra (.edition, USA) on October 5 @ 8PM. A suggested $5.00 donation is requested. Artist Statement: "Over the past few years I have moved from an interest in forming a graphical lexicon to an increasing satisfaction in the process of mark-making liberated from ingenuity and extended by repetition (something like that of the quilt-maker). The Black Walnut series is potentially limitless and essentially unfinished. Having found a set of materials which contain their own modulation (the varying and beautiful shades of brown and sienna in this home-made ink) and having defined a parameter of limitations (the five-inch square format and the most simple of graphical elements - points and lines), I opened the process to an ever-increasing number of variations within those limits, which I set and follow-through. Some variables are concrete (the density of lines radiating from each point, the number of points within the frame, the connectivity of points, etc.) while others are subjective, dealing with degrees of organization, the imposition of intelligence or complex systems. As I move the balance of weight to one or another of these variables, the results show a large degree of visual difference and in turn, suggest further alterations. Thus I find that their interest to me is not one of decoration or aesthetic fancy but the perhaps more humble mode of research, simply following a line of investigation which results in continued questions. These geometries, like the ink, are hand-made. The time of their making is evident upon the surface. Each established situation could potentially continue, filling the space until it is black. However, each time, I stopped short of this extreme, realizing the impermanent beauty of a critical edge. Their entirely simple construction reflects the basic forms evident in organic material (microscopic close-ups of skin or plant fiber) or human systems of mapping. To me, each point acts as a center of influence, spreading outward. They all touch each other indirectly, the crossings of their touch result in a web which defines space. Each point weaves itself into the present." Soundvision presents contemporary work in all media with a special focus on 2-D and installation work that includes sound or relates to technology and/or the sciences. There will be a further focus on interactive environments. In the coming months the gallery will present new works by San Francisco photo-montagist Chris Komater, Toronto's conceptual Bruce Eves, the cryptically sexual autobiographical work of Washington DC's Ira Tattleman and new paintings and multiples by New York super artist Cary "Candyass" Leibowitz in December. Soundvision will also present performances that focus on microsound and minimal noisescapes with an experimental edge. The gallery will run a mini shop which will consign limited art edition CDs and LPs. See www.tjnorris.net for info.
