'the urban renewal program is the past, present and future of urban art, music and expression.' excellent compilation out from chocolate industries featuring idm tainted hip hop (or vice verse?) putting the likes of el-p, aesop rock, mr lif and rjd2 side by side with prefuse 73, caural and dj food. plays like a mixed tape, perfect for riding the bus downtown. after 'previewing' this one for awhile, was more than happy when I got the real deal with artwork, which really completes this. the music represents some of the best in urban/hip hop sounds and the packaging is an excellent extension of the music, expressing urban living through a series of art pieces featured in the notes. musicians include : prefuse 73, aesop rock, mosdef & diverse, diverse, mr lif, souls of mischief, rjd2, while, el-p, dj food, miho hatori, tortoise, caural and themselves. ........................................................................ ................. i don't like it. i think most of the hip-hop tracks are dope for the exception of the souls of mischief, rjd2, and dj food. the prefuse 73 track is a bit different but now it has people big upping chocolate? how fucking cheesey is that? the tortoise and miho tracks are boring as hell, and although i'm a fan of themselves, the track was too damn long ( has anyone noticed the durutti column sample in that song?). i think the idea of the urban renewal is great, and there will be more comps coming from chocolate, but this one puts me to sleep.

I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of the 'big upping' in general. it bothered me on soundbombing and other like releases, although was happy that they messed about with most of the bits like that here so it wasn't just there with zero appeal. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i have to agree with robert here. this comp is boring. it's like everyone's just giving a half-ass effort or they gave a song they made a while ago. either way, i'm not feeling it. i know these artists can do so much better....i've heard it before...and that's one of the reasons why i don't understand why people are loving this shit so much. i think, maybe, it's because people don't know their rap and this sound is somewhat new to them or people just want to jock this because of the name's involved and it's 'cool' to like this...i don't know. i do know that this is one of the biggest disappointments. the best thing about it is the art & packaging....but that can only go so far...you know. i do have a recommendation for some good rap music though. maybe the best rap album this year: BUSDRIVER -temporary forever. this is a must have. blows all that other shit out of the water. you can also get any of the artists on that comp's solo shit...but that comp sucks...you'd be wasting your money & time. k, enough of my negativity. i never really say anything...cause who am i to talk shit....but i figured i had something to say with this one. peace :dustin

it's not like that at all....the reason i think the busdriver is so good is because it's inventive and it brought back my faith in the whole project blowed/freestyle fellowship camp. for a while there, i had the feeling that they were falling off...but this release brings back a little hope that maybe they still have it. and if you think it's because busdriver raps fast...you couldn't be more wrong. it's not the speed of his flow...it's what he's saying and how his flow rides atop the beats. no other mc does it like this....that i've heard so far. and i still feel the urban renewal comp is boring. if you need specifics, here's a couple of examples. there's way too much time spent on chopping up the radio spots & interviews. prefuse is just rehashing old material with his 'radio part 2 track'. aesop rock track is just weak compared to his previous work...plus who wants to hear him talk about how horny he is for so long at the end of the track. mos def, diverse & prefuse track; prefuse needs to make inventive beats...not just try to make a stereotypical rap beat...and you can hear that mos def didn't put his all into the song. sounds like he just ran into the studio, spit his verse, & left. diverse, to me, sounds like he wants to be talib kweli. so that bothered me. mr. lif & souls of mischeif tracks are just average, but once again...not up to par compared to previous work. rjd2....average also. the while track is ok. el-p shouldn't of used a pitch-shifter on his voice. and i could go on...but i'll stop there. hopefully, now you'll be able to see where i'm coming from. and if you still think it 'sounds like you don't listen to much hip hop outside of a certain circle or something.' you're so wrong..cuz for one, i don't listen to hip hop. hip hop isn't a genre of music....so that shows me where your mind is at. and i wasn't looking for an 'idm' release with this comp...just something good that i would want to listen to over and over and over. not something that feels like it's going through the motions and sounds like it could of been released on rawkus or something. well..hope that clears things up for you and you shouldn't make so many assumptions in the future. everyone else...sorry to waste your time with this. :dustin
