I would pick silence over noise. I think some good examples of why would be the undeniable effect that minimal techno, ambient and "micro house" have had on progressive electronic music. Artists like Pole, Jan Jenelik, Pan Sonic, Atom Heart have all gained popularity threw striping away unnecessary elements in there music.
