Handbag techno or happy handbag, assuming they're the same thing, is (kind of) the progenitor of happy hardcore- little pink squishy cartoon melodies on top of 'banging' house/techno beats. Basically throwaway awfulness. I think it peaked in about 1995-6? IIRC, that's me trying to remember a really old issue of Mixmag, back when I didn't know any better and XLR8R wasn't on the racks at the local B&N. Please don't expect me to give artist references - uhh. I wouldn't admit to knowing if I did. (Disclaimer: I enjoy the Ural 13 Diktators 'Total Destruction' from time to time) Of course if you think about it too hard you might realize that a lot of IDM is little pink squishy cartoon melodies on top of 'glitchy' cubase overkill. But that's different. well, i've heard the term "handbag" used to describe house music that, uh, girls might like to dance to. because they'd put their handbags down, and dance around them. i haven't heard it used very much though. and no one has ever been able to explain to me in musical terms what makes something "handbag." i think it's another way of saying "that club shite." j On Mon, 8 Jul 2002 Mediadrome@aol.com wrote:

Well, if I remember that genre-splitting madness from around then, there was also another Mixmag-coined offshoot - 'hardbag'. Suffice to say, all these records were shit. Dan.

It was known this side of the water (ie - Ireland / UK) as Handbag House. Basically house with more bpms less jazz and/or blues plus a "song" structure to include screaming diva vocals, loads of pianos and breakdowns. Aimed at a dressed up crowd like defunct London club nights Malibu Stacy and Billion Dollar Babes. See M People, Rozalla, JX, Livin' Joy, Black Box etc. Paul Chillage ----------------------------------- the Chillage Idiots, Xfm, Dublin, Ireland est.
