I didn't, but here's a tip for everyone who already has their email address(es) registered with YahooGroups: If you go to http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs you'll see a list of your registered address(es). Click the "Options" link next to each of them, and you'll get an options screen. The first option should be "Group Invitations", which I believe is set to "Allow group moderators to directly add me to their groups" by default. Change that to "Allow group moderators to invite me to their groups" - you may still receive annoying invitation messages, but you can just ignore them and you won't be on the list. interesting and useful, but the email address that the subscribed message was sent to was never registered with yahoo groups... i would assume that this means that yahoo allows you to add non-registered users to your groups at will. gah. -rachel (dj pie) -- piesarenice.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oh. Well, never mind then. :)

Yeah you can, although it says next to that option on the Invite Members screen to "Use this feature responsibly". I believe you can report list admins who abuse this option to YahooGroups, but I'm not sure what sort of action they'll take. That was very very helpful information ! Also FYI, this very discussion was bounced around on the Ambient list just a week ago (or so). It seems misleading but although you have been "added" to someone's discussion group this does not necessarily mean you have been subscribed. Oftentimes you have to actually confirm subscription. I could be wrong about this one though... yeah, it sure looks to me as though i've been added to their list. there's no confirmation information, just unsubscribe info. i was part of the discussion on the ambient list about this too, and for the record, i think it's plain wrong to abuse email addresses in this way. i've sent my complaint to abuse@yahoogroups, but the person who started this thread on the ambient list did the same thing and never received any sort of response. *shrug* -rachel (obviously cranky today, HI) -- piesarenice.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You're half-right. When you are a list admin and you want to "invite" someone to join your mailing list, you can either send them an invitation that they have to reply to in order to be subscribed, or you can subscribe them directly. Yahoogroups strongly recommends the former, but provides the latter so you can do stuff like move mailing lists over easily from your personal address book or other mailing list services. On the regular user side - you can choose whether or not you will allow the second method (direct subscription) to be applied to any email addys that you have registered with Yahoogroups. But there is no way to completely stop list admins from inviting you to join their group using the first method.
