in regards to this, it's important to remember that it's not every musicians
goal to create something original. this is certainly the case in the 'rock'
world where we find arrowsmith cover bands. these people simply want to
rock, nothing more.
luckily we have genres like idm that is partially defined by it's
(hopefully) never ending desire to reinvent/interpret itself (at least this
is part of my idealist definition).
it may seem like obvious shit, but i think it's sort of interesting... now
when i see a boring, cliche band i think to myself that their motivations
are simply different than my own (why should i expect them to be playing
what i want to hear, maybe their playing what they want to play exactly as
they intended, but it just sounds like shit to me and my preferences). they
aren't necessarily failing at creating something new, they never cared to in
the first place.
disecting musician's perceived motivations through their musicality is
interesting. you can hear the compromises in specifics sometimes...
