dear friends, just a note to fill you in our latest and forthcoming releases, its been a while since we've sent out any info updates of this kind so apologies for the barrage of information. current: vform012 opiate: possible a1) 070201, a2) 100301, b1) 020301, b2) 100301 alva noto re-model notes: stunning 4 trk ep from denmark's thomas knakk. a slight departure in style from his previous outputs but still containing all the classic opiate hallmarks of rhythmic complexity and evocative melody. adopting a slightly more digital and reduced approach, possible documents a new and more digital direction to opiates unrivaled and ever evolving sound. the ep also contains a rework of 100301 by alva noto. vform013lp / vform013cd piiri: gpu (revised) 1. original, 2. farben's hello cello mix, 3. pan american mix, 4. smyglyssna mix, 5. dual excitor remake, 6. phonem mix notes: piiri is the alter ego of the legendary ilpo väisänen, one half of the world-renowned finnish pan sonic duo. originally written and released in 1999 'gpu' is taken from the highly sought after 'jarru' ep released by marko laine's mind records imprint. the original version is re-released here along with five alternative remixed versions by farben, pan american, smyglyssna, dual excitor and phonem. vform014lp / vform014cd pro bono publico 1. pan american - settling dust, 2. kim hiorthøy - möblera rum, 3. iso68 - engel Korrigiert, 4. corker / conboy - kite, 5. pan american - sleep & Fall, 6. corker / conboy - akka, 7. iso68 - here / there, 8. kim hiorthøy evil house, evil day, 9. corker / conboy - and five, 10. pan american - 2 streams, 11. kim Hiorthøy - in real life i am useless, 12. iso68 - est plus notes: pro bono publico is a various artist project with a difference. a project concentrating purely on the concept of emotion in modern music through using traditional and acoustic production techniques as opposed to that of machine made music. four different artists / production outfits were chosen, each of which, from entirely different creative circles around the globe, chicago, oslo, hamburg and london. each of the contributors, whilst having never met and being situated hundreds, if not thousands of miles apart, all share a common view in terms of their passionate musical idea's and constant thirst for emotive music. each of the contributors were asked to supply three specifically written tracks that explored the various emotive states and feelings within their music using predominantly acoustic production approaches. of course, this idea and concept can sound somewhat complicated and even slightly pretentious when put down on paper, the project however could'nt be further away from either of these tag's. In essence, its about getting back to grass roots. beautiful, moving and heart felt music made with real instruments by individuals that understand how to translate feeling into music. vform016 pan american: renzo a1) running dog (reborn), b1) toy triggers, b2) renzo notes: in preparation for pan American's 'river made no sound' album released via vertical form this month, 'renzo' has been put together as a subtle taster of what is soon to come from this highly acclaimed production project. three tracks are included, each exclusive to this EP, clocking in at just under thirty minutes playing the time. each track drifts effortlessly through the varying emotions and feelings that the pan american project has become synonymous with, whilst also providing a calculated glimpse of what is yet to come along with a valuable insight into why pan american has become such a highly acclaimed production project. vform017lp/cd pan american: the river made no sound 1. plains, 2. for a running dog, 3. settled, 4. place names, 5. redline, 6. raised walk, 7. st. cloud, 8. 2-sided, 9. right of return notes: pan american is the work of mark nelson; vocalist, lyricist and guitarist in the chicago based labradford trio which has over the course of the last 5 years significantly opened the parameters and possibilities within the world of indie / space rock. pan American, which was originally set out to further explore an alternative form of sound aesthetic than that of the labradford outputs has grown from an initial personal research project to something of far greater significance and wide scale reception than ever initially imagined. In many senses it is a techno project. techno, that is, in the true sense of the word; machine made soul music. however, unlike the current trend within so much electronic music pan American moves away from the obsession and fixation on process that dominates so much of today's electronic output and instead delves much deeper into the control and movement of sound and it's formation. heart moving dub styled production techniques drift effortlessly over minimal pulsating groove's that are somewhat industrial in parts, soothing, hypnotic and almost saddening in others, yet always emotive in every sense, 'the river made no sound" is a soundtrack to changing times. reduction is very much the key to many of the tracks that ultimately form one hypnotic body of work, yet as a whole, warmth and groove is never substituted for self-indulgence or abstraction for the sake of abstraction. expertly structured through careful thought and realization of idea's but simplified in arrangement to form a narrative approach to fit a number of moods and listening environments. forthcoming: vform015lp / vform015cd smyglyssna: we can fix it 1. might it be's and if it were's, 2. work shall be abolished, 3. triangular ears, 4. the duck people, 5. we can fake it, 6. fractical practal, 7. foaming prairie, 8. elastic egos, 9. tea with angela notes: after the huge warming reception received over smyglyssna's debut vertical form release 'u don't jump like i jump' and the release of his 'departures' ep, vertical form are pleased to announce the release of 'we can fix it' henrik johansson's debut album proper. after months of production, tweaking and final adjustments the album finally see's the light of day, clocking in at 46 minutes in length, with 9 tracks in total, each cut individually incorporating smyglyssna's signature sound whilst offering a new funkier and more diverse edge to his production approach. through careful combination of sophisticated software use, along with more traditional analog production techniques, smyglyssna creates a sound that looks to the past for reference whilst simultaneously defining a take on the future. working with a variety of hip hop sensibilities along with a variety of differing electro and techno sound aesthetics, 'we can fix it' works on a variety of levels providing listeners with a body of work documentative of both a generation of music along with his own vast array of musical influences. cut's such as 'mights it be's and if it were's' look to early ninetees detroit scraping through remnants of carl craig's 69 project and stacey pullen's kosmik messenger outputs whilst reinventing their take on the format of electronic funk by breathing new forms of synthesis into the construction of these types of groove. 'triangular ears' adopts a similarly fresh take on the format of experimental and avant hip hop by providing a backdrop of crisp, distorted drum beats alongside a more alternative selection of playful melodies and tight programming creating a groove at home in a variety of environments. 'foaming prairie' provides a beautifully crafted momentary breath of heart felt ambience to calm and console the listener whilst also providing a small insight into an alternative side of the smyglyssna sound. In all, an album of constant diversity, rhythmic essentials and heartfelt emotion packed with an obsession of sound and invention. vform018 rechenzentrum: nelson a1) nelson suite, nick rapaccioli remake, b2) nelson reprise notes: berlin based electronic duo rechenzentrum widely known for their work with kitty yo make a welcome guest appearance to the uk's vertical form with a stunning new 12" entitled 'nelson'. the release marks an entirely new level in their production approach which compromises a slightly more jazz tinged element to their warped minimal house sound by incorporating a number of live elements inc trumpet and piano to a sparse, raw and experimental house groove. drawn out over eight minutes in length the groove develops in a number of differing directions continually building into a fresh and distinctive dancefloor groove perfect for the more discerning and adventerous of club and backroom environments. the b side see's a welcome return for nick rapaccioli with a flawless remake of nelson. by deconstructing the original groove to its basic components and reworking the groove from a differing view point an entirely new cut of the original is created. maintaining groove and funk throughout and never venturing too far away from the dancefloor the rework takes things to a different level with a slightly more experimental and minimal approach that holds the essential element of groove firmly in place. nelson reprise is an altogether different approach and offers an alternative viewpoint of the original in the form of a more relaxed lounge orientated version. whilst still holding onto the live elements of the initial groove and adopting a more folk orientated easy listening flavour the reprise provides a suitably apt closure to the single. vform019lp / vform019cd einóma: undir feilnótum 1. beltral square, 2. glerborgir, 3. hringlógun, 4. amonie, 5. en route, 6. celvoir, 7. brot, 8. undir engu notes: einóma is the work of two close icelandic friends and long time studio partners. having initially dabbled in the world of shortfilm making commencing from the tender age of 13 years old, an early fascination was developed for sound and its ability as a tool to compliment and often drive storytelling. this dominant fascination within their work soon became more and more prominent to evventually overide the filmaking and to take primary importance within their creative goals. initially adopting a sound of pure ambience and filmic sensibility, their production approach slowly developed into more rhythmically orientated pieces along with a backdrop of their much loved soundtrack orientated aesthetic. having released only one ep to date on the icelandic uni:form label, 'undir feilnótum' is their debut album and first release of many with vertical form. their work cleverly combines elements of both influence and invention that so much of todays electronic output falls short of, whilst simultaneously maintaining and balancing a distinct prduction approach that firmly places their sound within the premier league of experimental recording outfits. 'undir feilnótum' is a dark and deeply atmospheric album, incorporating eight tracks clocking in at 38 mins in length, each cut firmly demonstrates their obsessive skill for programming, intricate sequencing and rhythmic construction providing a body of work consisting of varying themes, moods and tempo's whilst continually forging ahead with a fresh outlook on both their own sound and the format of contemporary electronics. vform020lp kim hiorthøy: hei a1) politiska dikten återvänder, a2) forskjellige gode ting, a3) den fula skogen bakom köket, a4) torture happiness, a5) jag finns inte mer, a6) juli, b1) teckningar och folk, b2) det uigjenklallelige ved det som er gjort og makten til å tilgi, b3) giving and taking book, b4) det skulle vara fint at se dig tänkte jag, b5) hänger långsamt i luften, b6) -, b7) hip hop is a way of life, b8) han brydde sig inte om at stiga upp, hela dagen lät han nya bilder omma och gå som de ville, sov lite ibland och vaknade igen och visste inte alls vem han var. det var en fridfull och mycket spännande dag notes: vertical form is pleased to announce a limited vinyl issue of reknowned scandanavian artist kim hiorthøy's debut album 'hei'. previously only available in limted quantities and on CD only via hiorthøy's spiritual home 'smalltown superosund', this vinyl issue is an extremely welcome addition to the vertical form catalogue.hiorthøy, already a massive fan with the likes of john peel and coldcut to name but a few, has been a burgeoning character on the scandanavian music and art scene for many years now being widely reknowned for his work as a filmmaker, photographer, fine artist, graphic designer and of course musician. as a graphic designer and artist his work has graced the cover of creative review and amongst others he also takes care of art direction and design work for infamous scandanavian labels smalltown supersound, rune grammofon and motorpsycho . he has also recently published his own design book to massive critical acclaim entitled 'tree weekend' via die gestalten verlag in germany. 'hei', in many circles, has been championed as hiorthøy's most accomplished work and upon listening to this collection of 14 intimate tracks it is clear to see and hear why. experimental in many contexts, but never extreme, his sound is a combination of lo-fi electronics, field recordings, samples, glitch loops, violin and piano amongst a whole host of other instruments and production techniques. filled with charm and a delicate, fragile, childlike approach 'hei' is one soundtrack, of many, to hiorthøy's wonderfully charismatic world. regards, lily @vertical form lily may, vertical form, unit 1 ideal studios, 1st floor 25b vyner st, london, e2 9dg, united kingdom t/f: 0044 (0)20 89839320, e: lily@verticalform.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This sounds potentially right up my alley. Has anyone who'd care to comment heard it? Also great to see Vertical Form are reissuing Kim Hiorthøy's 'Hei'. That's one of my fave IDM releases of the past year or two. The Smyglyssna ep was excellent as well. I've been waiting on new material from that cat for a long time. His ambient track on that old plug research sampler is still one of my fave tracks of all time. I am really looking forward to hearing his newest album.. Any reviews of the murcof album on leaf and the most recent people like us release? I'm contemplating tracking these down but funds are limited. I've only read press on them.. I'm curious what people who paid $20 for the albums think. ~g -- Greg Smith http://www.laiad.com "There is no such thing as a perfectly accurate clock.
