Has anyone done a track or set entirely with custom-made ring tones? It must be out there somewhere. It would be pretty bitchin' to do a live set with a stereo mic and an array of half dozen phones and a PC or two doing a bunch of auto dialing. Ideally you would have a PBX with multiple lines out to do simultaneous dial-outs, or a bunch of phones to use as the outgoing calling "instruments"... Please, someone pay me to do this. ghede@well.com http://www.quietamerican.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Heh. Well if you haven't seen Colingib it's worth it too. Colongib and the whole Kracfive crew should be getting the attention that Tigerbeat6 does. Maybe they should hire Miguel's publicist that got his mug into every magazine on earth. I think Kid606 was on the cover of a Ukrainian Fly Fishing Quarterly ... But ditto on the Stewart Walker recommendation. I'm biased because he's a friend from way back, but he and only a few other people really do techno live as it should be done ... Already been done - some swedish guys did a 'cellphone symphony' where the audience made the music - there was an article about it on www.npr.org a while back, you might want to search the site and see if it's still there. There was also a news item about it on my site, joyrex.com - you could check the news archives. There's an album on Touch called 'Touch Ringtones'. Touch cast their net much wider than IDM, but according to the info on one of the web stores out there this album includes some people who get talked about on here. "99 tracks - 177 ringtones. The process of transferring made-to-measure Ringtones to your mobile phone is, at present, a fixed casino... Chart hits, 'celebrity' voices, action heroes, lame keyboard melodies... so the likelihood of hearing one of these on the 07.34 from Carshalton is, at present, remote, although the J range of Sony mobiles promise better things. However each of these has been composed with exactly this eventuality in mind. All the compositions included here are in one way or another intended to be experienced as isolated, personal interventions: low-res loops, creature calls, in low-res environments, with the branding of surprise. In whichever form you find them here, do sample and employ these humble suggestions... We assume you already agree that the cheap 'cheep cheep' tones of Nokia, Ericsson and the others leave a lot to be desired. But there is huge commercial possibility here, not least with the fact that these selections have not been motivated by database usage... this is far cooler, and the contributors have responded accordingly... With New Order, Fennesz, Ryoji Ikeda, Gilbert & George, Mika Vainio, Mark Van Hoen, PITA, Hazard, Oren Ambarchi, Graham Lewis, Bruce Gilbert, AER, Zbigniew Karkowski, Hecker, Ake Hodell, Main, Chris Watson, Regina Lund, Elgaland-Vargaland, Francisco Lopez, Disinformation, Bigert & Bergstrom, People Like Us and many many others, this release shows what is possible and how far behind the phone companies actually are.... despite their desperation to uncover new ways of selling the next generation of phones to an already saturated market." the future will be a little more interesting. some of the enhanced multimedia features of the 2.5G and 3G phones allow some pretty cool stuff. gianluigi di costanzo (bochum welt) has written some extremely lush ring tones and pad tones for his nokia communicator. it's beautiful to hear a call come in on that thing..... for the extremely limited audio capability of todays handy's, i vote for more stripped down quantized sounds like skanfrom or some of the "electroclash" (ouch, i said it) stuff like adult or legowelt. respect, Jeff Davis fon: 216.266.69696 pHlow@earthlink.net fax: 216.266.2360 home.earthlink.net\~phlow cel: 216.533.6303 hyperreal.org\music\rotator\ -----Original Message----- From: Michael Upton [mailto:m_upton@myrealbox.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 6:18 PM Cc: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] IDM ringtones Actually, re-reading what I cut and pasted, perhaps 'Touch Ringtones' is just ideas for what ring tones could sound like rather than using ring tone technology..?
