Well, it does. What a complete letdown. I realize diversity and progress have never been BoC's strengths, but this is really going too far. It's like a compilation of throwaway b-side tracks from their past 6 years of releases. Not a single track jumped out at me. It's a seemingly endless cycle of boring 4-minute track, even more boring 1-minute filler track, boring 4-minute track, boring 1-minute filler track.. on and on in a mind-numbing, soul-crushing downward spiral of mediocrity. Way to make the most of that ~4 years between albums, guys. It REALLY shows. i think tha BoC are geniuses. i loved geogaddi and it's been on constant rotation since i downloaded a bootlegged copy, burned it onto a cd and put it into my cd player. Rip. Mix. Burn. gotta love Apple Inc. the main issue i have with them is their homosexuality. i just can't abide gayness. it really does nothing towards legitimizing this type of music. morrisey was a failure and so are these guys. but i love their music. i think i have issues. gay people should pack it in, or rather STOP packing it in, cause that's their problem! peace grady On Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at 02:34 AM, Danny wrote: Well, it does. first things first, and since this is about the music and not about personal choices, i thought i'd give my opinion on the album. it doesn't suck. however, the ambient does remain from previous albums, which makes it sort of boring for people who don't listen to boards of canada like they should (and if you do, you know what i mean -- no, this doesn't involve "substances"). anyway, its a pretty good album (high times at 1969 and "the beach at redpoint"), though i don't understand the need for the filler tracks all the time. the being-gay-thing is one of the issues that i really don't get. being straight, i've always lacked the understanding needed to cope with gay relationships, however, i totally disagree when the "gayness" is said to be a bad thing for the kind of music we're talking about here. if they truly are gay, f*ck that, i like their music, thats it. and blaming them for being gay, when we're talking about music, is going totally out of scope. fred. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

What the fuck is wrong with you people!!! can we be a tad more cosmopolitan here. Anyway, what is this referring to, when did they say they were gay? In regards to the album, I liked it. The changes in style are very subtle as are the additions to their sound palette. I don't think it's always the goal of a musician to constantly flip the scripts and drastically change or evolve their sound. One may say that the progress seems slow here but that would seem to match the mood of the music. BOC makes introverted "downtempo" brooding music and they do it really well. There are about 5 or 6 tracks on that record that are definite classics and very dance floor friendly, I think that's a really good ratio. The other tracks are great listening tracks. Everyone complains about the fact that autechre just doesn't sound like autechre did in the old days well, BOC is still BOC, maybe that's a good thing. ~adesh http://www.recordcamp.com p.s. there are photos on the site from last weeks boc listening party in NYC. -----Original Message----- From: Hackett, Kelley M. Agreed. Homophobia is just as small minded as racism, sectarianism or sexism, and I anyone who has these views should keep it off list, and well .... just basically grow up. I don't mind homophobes, just as long as they arn't homophobic near me :-) Calling for end of topic now. Anyway, erm music is good and stuff. Record Camp wrote:

Personally, I like gay people. I think it's always a good idea to keep a couple of queer friends around - they tend to have good fashion sense, and have been known to say something interesting from time to time. (eg. Matmos) I might point at this point that, in addition to being high on cocaine for most of the 70s (please see the "idm & substances" thread if you're confused), David Bowie also played with other men, behaving bisexually and proclaiming at one point that he was completely gay. Of course, now he's not anymore and instead is married to Iman and has a little daughter. How much straighter can you get? So, to sum up, gay people nice to have around, but I wouldn't want to be one, and David Bowie came up in two separate IDM threads in one day! This message was brought to you by the number 6, the greek sign for Delta, and the letter Y. (And we all know what that says when you put it together.) BTW, this was all just a joke. Actually, I hate gay people, and wish they would stop having sex with me. .adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Regarding Bowie, you have to consider not only the time he was recording but also the sheer volume of work he has produced. Say what you want about him or about his music, but his influence, particularly in the mid-late 70's, to electronic music is fairly significant.

Interesting that you like only the most accessible, most commercial work of his.

There are so many facets to music, recordings, and sound that this comment doesn't make a lot of sense to me. In fact, some of the most notable catalysts in modern music have less to do with slick production and engineering and more to do with new ideas and lo-fi sensibility. Witness house music and the beginnings of Detroit techno for an example of this (also punk, ska, rock and roll, etc.). Check out Station to Station (1976) or Low (1977) -- these are two of my favorite albums of Bowie's. --- Tom Butcher --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Did they? Is there actually an article, interview or press release out there where one or both members of Boards of Canada mention that they are gay? Not that I really care who or what they happen to stick their pee-pees into. I'm just wondering if this l'il flamefest is based on documented facts, or a flame-baited message posted by a fairly obvious troll. about it - i deleted it already. i swear it was not me! my point is - it has nothing to do with sound of the music anybody read Vincent Gallo's interviews? he has a point about "gay movement" and what happened to it. Actualy Gallo is a very smart and radical guy. He has aa album on Warp. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Yeah, I'm pretty sure this whole thing is completely unsubstantiated. It's nonsense, really. I don't remember where it started, but as far as I know, it has no basis in fact, and if it does, it makes no difference. Gabe On Tuesday 05 February 2002 03:59 pm, you wrote:
